Tobacco in Sancti Spíritus is once again reducing its traditional reputation and the new decline experienced in the plain even compromises that name of the second most productive territory in the country, after Pinar del Río.

In statements to the press, Isidro Hernández Toledo, agricultural director of the Sancti Spíritus Tobacco Collection and Processing Company, reported that - until February - of a plan of 1,600 hectares, 776 were planted. Of that area, 290 hectares correspond to covered tobacco, 30 more than planned, while in the sun tobacco modality, of 1,340 registered hectares, only 486 were planted, the manager detailed.

Such a decline will have a negative impact on the final results of the campaign, Hernández Toledo said. This seeding cut does not occur now, but has its precursor in the previous contest and in the same sol palo modality for the same reasons. “This resulted in a high number of producers not planting tobacco,” the source himself stressed.
