It feels weird to cite an article whereby the 180th anniversary of the H.Upmann brand is been celebrated by a Non-Cuban cigar company, but there you go...these are the times that we are living in!

The H. Upmann brand has turned 180 years old and Altadis U.S.A. is honoring the milestone with a limited-edition cigar. Like the 175th anniversary smoke from 2019, the H. Upmann 180th Anniversary will be a Churchill, measuring 7 inches by 50 ring gauge.

Made in Nicaragua by A.J. Fernandez, the 180th Anniversary is a collaboration between Fernandez and Rafael Nodal, vice president of product capability for Tabacalera USA (Altadis U.S.A.’s parent company). The all-Nicaraguan blend features a medio tiempo wrapper that Nodal says was grown from a hybrid seed. Medio tiempo leaves sometimes sprout on the very top of a tobacco plant, above the corona level, and are valued for their concentrated power. While the dimensions for the 175th and 180th anniversary are the same, the blends are different.

Each H. Upmann 180th Anniversary has a suggested retail price of $22.50 per cigar, and comes in 10-count boxes. Only 5,000 boxes are being produced.

To further the celebration, Altadis will also be releasing a humidor containing 50 Toros (6 by 50). The humidors are priced at $1,500 apiece with a production run of only 180 units.

Both cigars will be on display at the PCA trade show, which starts this weekend in Las Vegas, and should ship to retailers in June.

H. UPMANN CELEBRATES 180TH ANNIVERSARY

Altadis U.S.A. celebrates a big milestone in 2024, as the H. Upmann cigar brand turns 180 years old. The limited-edition H. Upmann 180th Anniversary cigar commemorates one of the oldest and most renowned cigar brands in the world since 1844. The cigar, an iconic 50 X 7 Churchill size, will be presented in a detailed 10-count box. Only 5,000 boxes have been produced. In addition to these boxes, Altadis U.S.A. will also release 180 special-edition, numbered humidors – each containing 50 exclusive cigars in a 50 X 6 Toro size.

The legacy of the brand began when German banker Herman Upmann took a leap of faith and moved to Havana, Cuba, to open a branch for his family bank. He created a small batch of cigars for his best clients, and quickly became passionate about tobacco. This passion led him, alongside his younger brother, August, to develop their own cigar brand in 1844. Now, 180 years later, H. Upmann is still well-known across the globe. This H. Upmann 180th Anniversary cigar will serve as a testament to the H. Upmann brothers commitment to the masterful craft of cigars.

This unique Nicaraguan blend was created in collaboration with Rafael Nodal and AJ Fernandez using a medio tiempo wrapper from a hybrid seed that underwent an enhanced fermentation process, which gave birth to blend which boasts rich flavors and multidimensional complexity.

Rafael Nodal, Head of Product Capability for Tabacalera USA, states: “We are proud to pay tribute to the 180th Anniversary of the H. Upmann brand with this exceptional cigar. The blend features a complex variety of Nicaraguan tobaccos from different regions, providing an array of flavor nuances and aromas.”

To further celebrate H. Upmann’s 180th Anniversary and its reputation for utmost quality, excellence and craft, the brand has partnered with luxury bespoke hat maker, Wild Hats, to create a commemorative H. Upmann 180th Anniversary fedora style hat. Only a limited number have been produced and will be presented at Altadis U.S.A.’s booth (#7079) at the PCA trade show.  The Wild Hats team will be making hats in the booth.

The H. Upmann 180th Anniversary line includes:
10-count box: 5,000 individually numbered boxes
Vitola: 50 X 7 Churchill
MSRP: $22.50 per cigar

50-count Humidor: 180 individually numbered humidors
Vitola: 50 X 6 Toro
MSRP: $1500 per humidor package

H. UPMANN 180TH ANNIVERSARY SHIPPING NEXT WEEK

On Monday, July 29, Altadis U.S.A. will release two cigars that celebrate the 180th anniversary of the founding of one of the most influential cigar brands in history: H. Upmann.

H.upmann-180th-Anniversary-cigar-scaled.jpg

The H. Upmann 180th Anniversary is offered in two sizes, though most will only see a 7 x 50 Churchill. It is made by AJ Fernandez in Nicaragua and uses only Nicaraguan tobacco, including a medio tiempo wrapper. Medio tiempo is a priming of tobacco—the way a plant is divided into sections vertically—that is found above the ligero priming, typically the highest priming. It’s only found on certain plans and only some growers go through the effort of classifying it separately from ligero. Given its position on the plant, if a plant has medio tiempo tobacco growing on it, that tobacco should be the strongest tobacco from that plant. In recent years, a variety of manufacturers have marketed their cigars as explicitly containing medio tiempo tobacco. Oftentimes that tobacco was typically classified as ligero.

It has an MSRP of $22.50 per cigar and is limited to 5,000 boxes of 10 cigars.

There’s a more limited—and expensive—H. Upmann 180th Anniversary Toro (6 x 50) that is only sold in humidors. Each humidor will come with 50 toros and carries a price tag of $1,500. There were just 180 numbered humidors made.

At 23, Herman Upmann left his native Germany to work at an import/export company in the New World, eventually landing in Cuba. In 1844, he purchased a cigar factory in Havana, which not only grew to be one of the largest in the world but also was credited with being the first factory to affix labels to individual cigars, or what we now call cigar bands.

Habanos S.A., which sells the Cuban H. Upmann in non-American markets, has not announced an explicitly 180th anniversary cigar for H. Upmann, though the 2024 Edición Limitada class includes the new Magnum Finite. AJ Fernandez also produced the H. Upmann 175th Anniversary, which also used medio tiempo tobacco for the wrapper. According to Altadis U.S.A, the two blends are different.

The 175th is still floating around at a few shops. Just not certain I can justify buying these with as many other good smokes at this price range.
