Pinar del Río will plant about 13 thousand hectares of tobacco

Pinar del Río, the largest tobacco-producing province in Cuba, plans to plant about 13 thousand hectares (ha) during the 2024-2025 campaign.

Of them, 780 hectares will correspond to covered tobacco – from which the export layer is obtained – in the four municipalities that make up the so-called massif (Consolación del Sur, Pinar del Río, San Luis and San Juan y Martínez), he explained to the Agency. Cubana de Noticias Osvaldo Santana Vera, coordinator of the Tabacuba Business Group in Vueltabajo.

In addition, five thousand 950 hectares of first-class fine meadows; two thousand 555 second-class vegas finas; Burley's 400; 750 of Virginia, in Consolación del Sur, San Luis and Sandino; and two thousand 470 of sol en palo tobacco, he specified.

To support the plantations, it will be necessary to build 8,222 healing houses (leaf drying) that represent 31,305 rooms - he highlighted - in a territory that practically lost its infrastructure due to Hurricane Ian, in September 2022.

He explained that it is a big challenge because it translates into cutting and then throwing away about 5,500 pieces of wood daily in order to achieve that purpose; and today it is not fulfilled because forestry entities mainly lack lubricants for machinery.

This month the contracting of essential resources for the fight with the territory's tobacco companies must be concluded, he indicated.

Santana Vera specified, in that sense, that they have more than 70 percent of the fertilizer for the new campaign and the fuel is assured.

After the readjustment of the initial plan, in the 2023-2024 stage, the Pinar del Río farmers planted 10,200 hectares due, fundamentally, to the impossibility of completing the reconstruction of the healing houses in time.-

Wait, did I read that right that Cuba grows some Virginia tobacco?

Obviously a very small percentage of acreage (hectarage?) but still, would not have expected that. Assuming it’s used in conjunction with the Burley for cigarettes? Does Cuba produce indigenous pipe tobacco?
