KCCubano Posted October 2, 2024 Posted October 2, 2024 Royals win in a pitchers duel. Mets looking strong against the Brew Crew 1
MrBirdman Posted October 2, 2024 Posted October 2, 2024 Huge win for the Mets @JohnS, we’ll see if that was just adrenaline from yesterday or a sign of their momentum, and whether Manaea can banish his postseason demons tomorrow night! 1
JohnS Posted October 2, 2024 Posted October 2, 2024 The scoreline might have been 8-4 in favour of the Mets, however, the reality is that the difference between the two teams was a lot closer than that. I would highlight the play in the 5th innings when the Brewers were up 4-3 with 2 outs and Jose Iglesias beat out an in-field throw to the pitcher in the 'nick of time'. This made the score 4-4 and sparked a rally. By the end of the innings it was 8-4 and Game Over. I'm objective enough to admit that as a fan, I'm just riding a wave and enjoying things because this 2024 Mets team was not expected to make the Postseason. They were 22-33 at one point and sinking. Jose Iglesias got called up from the minors, releases a song called "OMG" that has become a rallying cry and the Mets then go on to have the best record in Baseball after that (65-38). You can't make it up...it's all theatre and I'm enjoying the show. If it's over this week on account of excellent Baseball, then I'm okay with that. 3

Riding wave as well here in Kansas City-Royals lost 106 games in 2023! 2

I’m just here for the ride and it is just exciting to see some life especially in the younger players on the team. A stark contrast to the last “playoff run”. Just happy to be here but the baby Mets also have something to prove and I think they know that. They are clearly establishing themselves as a competitive team. One last point, the Mets are actually better than the Brewers on paper. I haven't looked at relative schedule strength but I would guess the Brewers had a significantly easier schedule not being in the NL East. 1

The Brewers have built their success on leading the league in defense, so this is how they have maintained their competitiveness.
BigGuns Posted October 2, 2024 Posted October 2, 2024 I’ve never been a bigger Tigers and Royals fan than I have today. Great wins! Let’s go Metropolitans! 2
KCCubano Posted October 3, 2024 Posted October 3, 2024 Pretty shocking to see KC in ALDS. They were awful down the stretch. Lost seven in row at one point 2

Ford2112 Posted October 3, 2024 Posted October 3, 2024 On a serious note if the Dodgers don't win the whole thing with the roster they have I will be surprised. That said I wouldn't sleep on the Pads. I know Musgrove got hurt that may be really bad for them. 2
MrBirdman Posted October 3, 2024 Posted October 3, 2024 Good luck tonight/this morning @JohnS, would be fun for us to watch our teams duke it out in the NLDS. 1
JohnS Posted October 3, 2024 Posted October 3, 2024 The Brewers-Mets Wild Card Series has produced some great moments thus far. I mean, Jackson Chourio matched only Babe Ruth in producing two come-from-behind home runs to tie a game in postseason history. Surely it can't happen again, can it? All we need is a walk-off homer! 2
MrBirdman Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 What a comeback. Phillies are in for a very tough series. Congrats @JohnS. 2
JohnS Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 My son, who is equally a Mets fan and yet even more knowledgeable about baseball (and NFL) than me (if you can believe it) shut the TV off and left the room. He almost slipped and fell over when I demanded he return to watch what happened in the top of the 9th! 😂 What can you say? Hard luck on the Brewers because they played unbelievable baseball, especially in Games 2 and 3. You know, I quite like "The Natural", that 1984 Baseball film starring Robert Redford, but this show that the Mets are putting on in 2024 is even better! Now, let's look forward to every celebrity Phillies and Mets fan making an appearance in the Division Series! 3
MrBirdman Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 Mets are giving me an eerie feeling - they increasingly remind me of the 2022 Phillies. Not good for the 2024 Phillies! I think we’re in for a good series. I have to wonder whether that Monday double header actually helped the Mets build their momentum - I thought they might fall flat on their face in G2 but they didn’t. They’re a team that never believes they’re out of it, just like the best Phillies teams of the past 15 years. Unless they leave that energy in Milwaukee they’ll be really tough for the Fightins to stop. 1
JohnS Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 It's interesting that after I've watched a few US Sport Shows this morning discussing the MLB Division series playoffs, all the experts interviewed declined to give their views on the upcoming Phillies-Mets series. They all gave their views on the other series. Look, at the end of the day, we've got the best teams in baseball at the 'pointy end of the season' and it comes down to a matter of will as to who will prevail because the matchups are so close, on paper. I just want to see good baseball. If there are memorable moments/plays...all the better. What the Mets have done in the last week or so is provide the publicity required for the neutral fan to have interest in games that they would otherwise not. I mean...we are nowhere near the World Series itself. I remember previous Postseason matchups in the recent past that have barely mustered any following and have been quickly forgotten. I know one thing about this Phillies-Mets series. It is the first time both these teams have met in the postseason and the following of it will be huge. I don't expect a sweep, unless one of the teams plays exceptional baseball. 2
KCCubano Posted October 5, 2024 Posted October 5, 2024 @JohnS The talk around KC is the bitter postseason rivalry we had with the NYY in the late 70s and early 80s. I was listening to George Brett talk about it earlier today. 1
JohnS Posted October 5, 2024 Posted October 5, 2024 If I'm not wrong, those were the days when the team played hard, following George Brett's lead, and both Kansas City and New York were consistent and successful American league teams? And this transferred on later to the mid-eighties with the rivalry with Kansas City's neighbour, the St Louis Cardinals, no? Ahh, those were the days, weren't they? It's a nice way to publicise the Yankees-Royals series, after all, both teams have not met in the postseason for over 40 years. If the current vice-president of the KC Royals (i.e. George Brett himself) wants to remind his team of their legacy, and it motivates them to greater things, than all the better I say. 1

We finally beat NYY in 1980 ALCS. Same year Brett was flirting with .400 average. Ended with .390 1
JohnS Posted October 6, 2024 Posted October 6, 2024 @KCCubano, there's too many 'miracle' moments to discount the fact that the Mets are winning these games of late purely on a combination of momentum, luck, good preparation on opposition pitchers and unbelievable execution. The odds of a comeback against All-Star pitchers, Hoffman and Strahm in my view is close to zero after Zack Wheeler produced a gem. Consider too that all these 'amazin' comebacks are coming in AWAY games. We haven't seen a Mets HOME game yet in the postseason! For me, the question that must be asked is whether Zack Wheeler comes back in Game 4 of this Division series or not.
