HoyoFan Posted February 9 Posted February 9 I was having smoking a stick last night thinking about how varied all our tastes are. And how difficult it is to ask another person, something like, which NCs should I smoke if I like CCs - mostly because all our palates are so different. What I realized would be great to have is some sort of conversion chart. Something that would allow you to say "I get these flavors from this CC stick, and I get these other flavors from this NC stick." You could then hypothetically find another member on FOH who has a similar palate to you in the Cuban world and then potentially get a good recommendation on some decent bets to try in the New World.

Because everyone tastes different (no, I'm not talking about the difference between Soylent Green and Soylent Yellow), it is hard to get consensus on specific flavours. One person may taste leather, cherry and coffee, another smoking the exact same cigar may say they taste wood, bitter chocolate and milk arrowroot biscuit. Is either one wrong? Nope. 4 1

Even people with similar tastes can differ on different cigars. That's the beauty of it. 1
Nocoins Posted February 9 Posted February 9 I’m not great with particular flavors, but I could answer the question a different way, with a grouping of cigars I find comparable in terms of size, flavors, body, and overall character. They are: Illusione MK, Montecristo No. 3, and FOH 2023 Carlota. If I was considering a corona or laguito no. 2 right now, I’d pick one of those three. Could probably to this with 5 or 6 groups, but this is the one that comes to mind.
Çnote Posted February 9 Posted February 9 @Capn_Jackson and I were 'talking' about this, although he may disagree, which was the entire point of the concept. More on this later I'm sure...

I'd even say that the personal context (am I smoking alone, am I tired, am I in a bit of a hurry?..) can have a huge impact. Two similar sticks from the same box can taste different. And beware of the confirmation bias, if one expects a flavor he will find it (or not, some people react the other way), whether it is objectively there or not.

And that is without taking into account that what you ate and drank as an impact on the taste of the cigar. Honestly, I don't pay attention/read cigar reviews anymore it's kind of pointless (to me at least). 1
