I don’t see Sir Francis Tarkenton mentioned here.

Not even once…😡

Hmmm, not Marino? Favre? Brees? Elway?

I agree that the difference you mention makes rankings pretty difficult.  So I'd define the "best quarterback" as the best combination of: playing the position, leadership, competitiveness, longevity, and championship success.

Nope! I can still see Namath backpedaling flicking the ball with his wrist 65 yards to Don Maynard at Frank Youell Field playing the Raiders before the merger.

Patrick Mahomes can be top 5 in the history, based on his arm talent and he's the face in the league that NFL office trying so hard to build.

1. Brady. Even Pat can have 10 rings Tom is still higher here, there was  a 41 yrs old Brady beat Patrick Mahomes in AFC Championship, then a 43 yrs old Tom smashed Mahomes in Super Bowl.

2. Peyton - Even when Brady collected his 5th, 6th, 7th ring, no one is trying to downgrade Peyton, rivalry with Tom benefits him for another 2 decades sitting top 3 all time.

3 Montana - the youngest generation who did witnessed his showing are now at least 40's, including every kids from bay area (Brady, AR), when people fear to reveal his pick from Brady/Peyton, Montana is everyone's safe pick, and he have rings!

4 . Pat - he made Ravens/Bills average. Everyone said Andy Reid is bum when he's with Alex Smith, a team with no WR existed.

5. Aaron Rodgers - some people felt boring the endless comparisons of Messi-Ronaldo, they want beautiful plays which Zlatan Ibrahimovic constantly does, in NFL AR offered those incredible throws. Remember most Packers fans didn't believe AR can be much better than Brett Favre in 2008, it was current Cowboys coach McCarthy being the reason Rodgers and Jordy has one ring only.

I asked ChatGPT for an answer.  Its reply:

  1. Tom Brady: Widely considered one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, Tom Brady has numerous records, including multiple Super Bowl victories and MVP awards.

  2. Joe Montana: Known for his success in the postseason, Joe Montana led the San Francisco 49ers to four Super Bowl victories and was a two-time Super Bowl MVP.

  3. Peyton Manning: Manning is recognized for his prolific passing and leadership. He holds various records and won two Super Bowls during his career.

  4. Johnny Unitas: A pioneer of the quarterback position, Johnny Unitas played a crucial role in popularizing the forward pass. He was a three-time NFL MVP and led the Baltimore Colts to multiple championships.

  5. Brett Favre: Known for his durability and strong arm, Brett Favre had a distinguished career, winning a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers and setting several passing records.

Disclaimer:  I'm a biased Denver Broncos fan who hasn't been excited in oh...about 7 or 8 years now.  😉

For me there’s a difference between the most successful quarterback in the NFL and the finest quarterback to ever play in the NFL. I’ve seen most of the quarterbacks on this list live and nobody I ever saw could throw the ball like Joe Namath.

Jeff George threw a ball better than anybody. Namath threw 28 touchdowns and 27 interceptions a year. Namaths defense intercepted the Colts 4 times in SB3 but the Jets only managed 16 points. Namath is the only QB to not throw a TD in a SB. I'd rank him with Trent Dilfer and all the other schlamiel game managers. John

Mahomes is the new style of quarterback playing for the best head coach.

Mahomes would not be great if not for Andy Reid. And Reid took the Eagles to how many conference championships?? Give Andy any good quarterback, he will be great. The new non contact nfl, can’t hit a guy going across the middle, can’t hit the quarterback , put Joe Montana or Peyton Manning an entire career in this atmosphere, the stats would be mind blowing.

NFL MVPs and NFL All Pros absolutely matter when talking all time QB’s. Those are literally measures of how elite you were. Eli has zeroes across the board there. There is no way he ranks all time above Mahomes. That’s like saying Frank Gore is a better RB than Barry Sanders, Adrian Peterson, LaDanian Tomlinson, etc. because he has more rushing yards than they do. Longevity is a part of the equation, but it’s not the only thing.

I agree that MVPs and All Pros matter, but as I mentioned in my first post Eli was competing for those with 4 or 5 other QBs in the top 10 all time during his career. Patrick Mahomes hasn't faced nearly that same level of Competition during his career so far. It's all relative. Eli was competing for All Pros against the best to ever do it, Mahomes is competing for those awards against a lower tier of talent. For the most part, good quarterbacks, sure, but not all time greats like we saw in Peyton, Brady, Breeze. I noticed you didn't mention Terrel Davis in your list of all time great running backs. He was great, for a few years, but not long enough to be considered an all time great. I think Mahomes is still in that category, he obviously ahs the time to change that, but it will take more time.
