Board Games

I'm a sucker for a good board game. I think they must have been invented for Xmas time, right? Remember when Xmas/NY used to shut down your town for about two weeks? You had to prep going into it like you would a fallout bunker. 

Anyhow, I don't know why Breaking Bad Monopoly was something I HAD to have, but there it is. I've realised it's best to stop asking myself these questions. 

Who else engages in the family board game wars at Xmas? Favourites?

You had it easy. We'd play capital punishment and my dad would put a noose around my neck and have me stand on a chair the whole time. Thankfully I won every time.

Grew up playing Yahtzee. My grandma would yell " cat piss" to jinx the other players when they rolled their dice. I think she cheated too.

Risk and of course Monopoly - arguments included! 

For the geeks, Avalon Hill - their war games where instructions had more pages than War &:Peace. These would last days.

Panzer Leader and Flat Top.  But never during holidays.  Someone would say "That looks interesting. How do you play?" And then tap out by the 10 min mark when you've only covered the rules for air searches, surface action, flight action...

Yes - that was more than one person. Squad Leader, Guns of August and Rise and Decline of 3rd Reich were the ones we played.

Shogun. You spend half the morning setting it up and learning the rules (again), break for Xmas lunch, start playing the game in the afternoon (with the usual cursing, yelling, and lamenting wails due to shitty dice rolls), stop for Xmas dinner, and maybe finally by 10pm somebody has been declared the winner..... or everyone has already gone home without a winner declared.

I have Axis & Allies. Same deal. We once got through setting it up and I accidentally knocked the board and sent shit flying everywhere. We just gave up and did something else.

Catan. Brilliant strategy game, nice element of luck. Often comes down to the last round! Also teaches you that valuable life skill: pretending to cooperate.

Root is one I’ve been playing with a friend lately. Very fun!

Castles of Mad King Ludwig, a classic.

Catan, Carcassonne, and Five Tribes, a few more gems.

I’ve found that Risk exposes some of my less virtuous traits. I do, however, have a favorable record, so it can’t all be bad.
