The addition of Ben Stokes to their World Cup One-Day Cricket squad, after he had announced his retirement from the format, I'm sure upset the balance of things in their squad. Plus, I don't think they had the bowling required for the conditions. (I.e. Sure, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood worked out well in the Ashes this year in England, not so well in Indian conditions where the ball doesn't move so readily off-the-seam. Reece Topley, who is famously injury-prone lived true to form and got injured and Sam Curran spectacularly lost his form.)

I suspect you are right. I still think that if the Australians lose to England on Saturday, they will still qualify for the semi-final with games against Afghanistan and Bangladesh coming up.

true, but it would hurt.

apparently england have to finish 8th to qualify for the Champions trophy series, whatever that is. there'd be no pleasure for us aussies in England missing that, would there????

PIF (i.e. The Saudi Arabian government Public Investment Fund) is coming for the IPL now, PGA-type move in the making (i.e LIV golf) which has geopolitical angles as well. Media rights are already second to NFL only just by a couple $ mill per game.
