Olive Oil- Availability in USA

Trying to eat a lot better and I consume a lot of Olive oil and I am approaching the end of my artisan bottles. Not a fan of the cheap commercial oil with weak flavor, unknown harvest dates printed if printed at all or running close to the 2 year from production date. Seems the good stuff doesn't leave their region in Italy or AU. Seems I cant find anything in the USA or anyplace that will ship without placing a bulk order. I would like to find a bottle or Joseph Cold press our of AU but seems they are sold out for the season and can't find anyplace that will ship to me anyway. Same goes for terra d'otranto out of Italy and even a value tin of Cadel Monte.

My thought was get a nice bottle to go straight on a food product after it's cooked, or with bread etc for those really good meals. Then another good oil that could be good for either as a table olive oil and also for cooking with good flavor in a tin approx up to 3L.

I'm not a fan of "infused" oils that are built off a cheap tasteless oil for an overpriced retail.

Looking for some nice flavors (spice, fruit, grassy, etc) typical of a great artisan olive oil. Anyone got any suggestions.

His shop in Middletown, NY was my favorite Italian store. His olive oil he imports is great.

Just ordered a 2L of his olive oil with a 4oz reduced Balsamic. Looking forward to trying it out. Seems the sort of Olive Oil I'm looking for. Cant find it anywhere else. Probably a small local distribution. Those from my experience are the best. Thanks for the referral. Got him bookmarked on FB for any future orders.

So I've heard from many different sources. First time I heard about it was watching a documentary, then a couple publications and then this review popped up on my Youtube feed that I watched. Guess I'll have to wait until someone imports it here in the states.

I go for the Kirkland single origin olive oils at Costco.  Currently the one near my house has a Spanish and Italian DOP oils from 2022.  Hard for me to pick which is better.  Wife think the Spanish is better.  Both are about the same price in 1L bottle.

My family grow olives in Spain, Cintruenego Navarra to be exact. Cintruenego has their own press. Excellent oil.

Many years ago, they came and stayed with me. I introduced then to Joseph Oil. It was as if they were sipping Dom Perignon. Great stuff:D

hmm. not one mention of Greek olive oil.

https://greekreporter.com/2022/10/22/greek-olive-oil-becomes-italian/

In 2021, more than seventy-five percent of Greek olive oil exports went to Italy in bulk, the analysis found. This means that Greece supplied more than 111,000 tons of the 500,000 tons of olive oil Italy imported, representing nearly twenty-two percent of all of Italy’s olive oil imports last year.

Italy’s largest supplier is Spain, with a share reaching 61.53 percent.

hmm. the best stuff isn't exported. so just go Greek.

I like this olive oil tasters opinion when she discusses the Greek olive oil as best value and her time living on Crete. I may have to grab a bottle of that and the top luxury oil once the 2023 harvest is available. I do like their site for data on what they are selling. Harvest Date, Expiration Date, Origin of the olives disclosed all super important, but the bonus is their notes on taste, pairings, makeup of nutrients and so on is an added bonus.

Olive oil spikes my blood pressure into the 160's/170s so I avoid the stuff. Vegetable oils are just as bad. For some reason I do very well with animal fats, especially lard and the flavor seems to be agreeable as well.

I will use a high quality olive oil for vinaigrette or an occasional cucumber salad, but that's it.

As a Mediterranean, I love olive oil and I'm very surprised to read that, it has been known to help to lower blood pressure for decades, is it some kind of allergy?

As a fellow Mediterranean, the thought of never eating olive oil again is akin to having my tongue removed from my head via vivisection (in other words, without anaesthetic). For me, this is the definition of a true nightmare scenario.

Did you use it hot or cold?

I used it as a general purpose oil for salads, sauces, and whenever a steak was too lean and needed flavor. Would sprinkle a little on a fresh out the oven pizza, y'know they way it's kind of supposed to be done.

Seems like I can eat it sparingly on things like salads especially as vinegarette but that's it.

Wow it's incredibly rare apparently but you're not the only one...

last trip to Italy, tried to bring a bottle home that i got at the duty free airport shopping (needless to say, Italy has a pretty good selection there). get to the stopover on the way home at Doha and they insist that it is a dangerous substance which cannot be taken to Australia. they insist that this is not their decision but a ruling by Australian customs. needless to say, we discuss this. eventually, i am told that despite Australian officials declaring olive oil a dangerous substance not to be brought in (just out of interest, when i got home i did ask an official if he had any idea where this would have come from - he did not), if it was put in a separate bag then it would be allowed. of course, at this stage, i am through into security and cannot go back to get another bag and only have my little backpack with the computer, pills, books etc etc, so i cannot just hand them that.

no problem, says Kenneth (the African gentlemen holding me up at security was also named Kenneth and trust me, having the same name got me no preferences at all). he just happens to have a bag i can use. he pulls out some dinky hand made calico crap thing that i swear looks like some disabled child relative made in craft class, which she failed. the only surprise was he did not charge me for the bag - i think he forgot. so my bottle goes into this calico bag to be stored somewhere on the plane and i am pretty certain that is the last i have seen of it.

i wish.

after this, into the loading/waiting area with 300 other sheep before we board. next thing, i hear some bloke yelling, 'coming through, look out, security coming through'. Kenneth is wheeling a converted wheelbarrow which has one item. a large transparent beach ball thing which has, inside it, the calico bag with my bottle. people are going over like one giant bowling ball went through skittling them. i put my head down and pretend to ignore. Kenneth sees me and top of voice, 'hi, we have your bottle. it will blah blah blah'. 300 people, most of whom have been shoved out of the way by Kenneth, stare daggers at me.

back home, first thing off and into baggage, my beach ball of olive oil. i gave it away. did not really want to see it again.

FYI... Most olive oil in the US is not 100% pure olive oil regardless of what the packaging says. I also had this issue with blood pressure and discovered its mostly vegetable oil with olive oil mixed in.

Real olive oil in the US is not cheap, nor is it neutral tasting. You really have to hunt for it unfortunately.

www.Bramasoleoliveoil.com

Francis Mayes wrote a very good book, "Under the Tuscan Sun ",which is a delightful read, and this is her oil ,from her home in Cortona.

Exquisite, not cheap, and the perfect finishing oil for good cooking.

Buy the book on Thrift Books, try the oil, and enjoy a truly wonderful story...

BTW,,,Francis has written a few other books, including a cook book or two, and her novels include a recipe or two...enjoy !!
