109 Test Cigar Review

This cigar has been in my tupper for two weeks since landing so I thought it was time to give it a try. This cigar is very oily in the sunlight with a colorado colored wrapper. The scent at cold is leather with a hint of sweetness. A little squish all over and the give is the same everywhere, just a tad, filled nicely. I clip it and the dry draw is straight leather. 

Right away upon lighting I get a cocoa note, and a little cream right after. The first 1/2 inch or so of ash is bright white. The draw is firm yet produces a lot of smoke, and the burn is razor sharp so far. The cocoa and cream notes were separate initially, now blended together with a touch of coffee, like a cafe mocha, with a tad of sweetness. The cigar is light-medium in body, flavor is a medium, not "in your face", but very much present. Approaching the end of first 1/3 the flavor profile begins to favor the coffee note with the cocoa there on the finish and the cream completely gone. 

The 2/3 starts with the cocoa coming back to the front of the mix, and a little white pepper on the retrohale and finish. The body is just on the mild side of medium. The retrohale has been very smoooooth the whole cigar and right now is a blast of cocoa with a bit of white pepper at the end. Very nice!

The last third starts the coffee note becoming more prominent again and more like espresso now and the cocoa note being like dark chocolate, bringing in a little bitter, but more rich and dark notes. As I get to the last 3 inches or so the flavors come back to a milky cocoa, cream, and mocha coffee. It finishes along those lines as far as flavors. 

This was a fantastic cigar and right up my alley as far as flavors. Very "Montesque". Not a hint of bitterness you would see in youth and never a tad over medium the whole way. The burn was razor sharp and draw was the same throughout the whole cigar. It will be great to see how the flavors develop in the 6 to 8 months period.

Thanks for the in-depth review!  Is this the final version or are tweaks still possible?  Sounds great for me except the white pepper part.  I may try to do a split based on this review!

I didn’t hear if this was the final blend or not, but I would be happy if it was. It is always nice to have a mild-medium body in such a large cigar.

Thanks for the review.  If, per chance you've smoked the Puro Desnudo Cananazo Amanti IV, how would you compare the two cigars?  From your review I see many similar notes except that you seem to have more cocoa / dark chocolate in this release?

Hello @GVan I did smoke both and from a flavor profile perspective they are far apart. The Canonazo did have a cocoa note here and there, but there was a lot more going than that. The Canonazo has this sweet and savory thing going on, so it was sweeter than the 109, but also has these salty and savory notes that the 109 didn’t have at all.

The cocoa in the 109 was very “Montesque” and the star of the show in the profile. Instead of having these competing flavors that were here and there, the 109 had a core of cocoa, coffee, and cream with evolutions in those three throughout the cigar. And that is what I loved about it, the cigar went through many flavor evolutions around the same base of core flavors. The 109 was also much smoother than the Canonazo.
