PRESS RELEASE

BOLIVAR NEW GOLD MEDAL – EXCLUSIVE FOR CASA DEL HABANO

The Bolivar New Gold Medal has been presented during the Festival del Habano 2023 in Cuba.

The Bolivar New Gold Medal will be available exclusively for LCDH stores. It’s a size known as “Partagás 15” (48 x 165 mm). The original Bolivar Gold Medal has been discontinued in 2011. Although the ring gauge has grown from 42 ring gauge to 48, it is still the same length as the original Gold Medal.

Similar to the previous Gold Medal, the cigar is wrapped with golden foil, which starts at the top of the cigar and is covered by the Bolivar band at the bottom. Below the second band is a red LCDH band. The Bolivar New Gold Medal will be sold in 10-count packs.

The Bolivar New Gold Medal will be available at Swiss Casa del Habano on the 8th of August 2023.

I enjoyed the original BGM...

Wait for the price on these....(notwithstanding the increasing ring gauge)

I think we were selling the originals at $87-$110 a pop.

How pricey are they?

Haven't seen them for less than $500 anywhere in stock. Price on BR seems to be around $550.

I've had a couple and enjoyed them. I'd say comparable to the BBF in strength. A little lacking in complexity. 5+ years might help that. Great vitola though. Pretty close to a Hermosos No. 1. Would I pay $50+ for them? No.

Halfwheel's review on the Bolivar New Gold Medal...

https://halfwheel.com/bolivar-new-gold-medal/439502/

I haven't smoked one yet but they rated it 82 which is 3 points lower than the Vegafina 1998 20 years gran reserva (I've smoked a dozen of those and they're really boring cigars imo) so... Does any of you really take their ratings into account before purchasing ?

Had 08 Gold Medal boxes and the ones I smoked I was not impressed at all and no age was going to help them out very bland. You neeed gas in the tank to go somewhere and these were empty! Bought from multiple Vendors.

A lot were plugged (very tight) maybe with the one box I sampled from ! Maybe I was just unlucky with the box I had opened. I always wondered if the gold foil hurts the cigar from expanding as they are tightly wrapped around the cigar and causing tight draws. Maybe take off the foil and let them rest with out it will make a difference?

I was so excited when I brought them back in the early 2000’s. I let the rest of them all go on a trade years ago and was not going to take a chance on smoking the others.

The New release Gold Medals, the people that I know that have smoked them and they are not happy with the bigger ring gauge! But say they are much better flavor wise than the early 2000’s Gold Medals.

When I get some New Gold Medal I will sample them and give my thoughts. Remember everyone’s palate is different. Sometimes you just have to try out a cigar for yourself just to see what you personally think.

I've seen them at some LCDHs for $290 I believe. Their article states the price as $280 a box. Yet I haven't seen them on any grey markets for less than $500 (typically they're selling for much more than that). 😑

Me too...which places them well within the current range of price increases over the past 5 or 6 years.

Being a huge fan of Libertador, as well as most of the newer crop of LCDH releases, I was very happy to find a box of these in the wild recently. Now that they’ve rested from their voyage, I’m definitely setting fire to one this evening.

The first boxes were sold at the festival for $270 but the Cuba price is $330 so they won't be any less than that anywhere. I have seen them advertised at lower than the market of $550 but curiously they're always out of stock. Not sure why any LCDH would sell them that low as the market is clearly $500+. Even Rob sells out at $550. I suspect it's a misleading price for an out of stock item to get people to the site.

Yeah the grey market for them certainly seems higher than what their 'set' price actually is. I haven't seen them on any webpage for less than 500.

Late last year a European LCDH was selling them for about 270 euro. I know others have seen them in Andorra shops for around the 300 USD price too. (not sure how recently though).

Sorry to hear about your experience. I am fortunate in that the box I smoked had no construction issues. It was PBS JUL 07 and had a unique "Coco Pop" or "Chocolate Crackle" note for lack of a better word. Think chocolate milk...but...crunchy... I remember @Fuzz and I smoking these at his place years ago.

I have another box of the same code and am yet to open it. I hope to buy a box of the New BGMs one day and do a SxS tasting.

As for the foil - on mine they all came off easy with no issues. They were pretty loose.

@Fuzz have you smoked any of yours recently? I recall you have a box.

Unless I’m getting them at island prices these aren’t even on my radar. I have a few boxes from 2009 that I’m not a huge fan of and increasing the ring gauge isn’t inspiring me to try again.
