worried about the snakes in Australia? fear the birds more.

I've been invited to Australia several times by very good friends.  I keep thinking about heading over as I miss those very good people and possibly getting in a little of the world famous golf courses as well.  Big Earnie Els fan!  Every time I think about it I remind myself that snakes and insects can kill you over there - now I have to think about the birds as well???

That bird looks a lot like kingfishers from our area.  I never saw a kingfisher eat a snake though.

kookaburras are actually the world's largest kingfishers. snakes are a favourite meal.

one put a mate of mine in hospital. you can get them used to being fed quite quickly but he had left some pate out on his verandah. one that was obviously fine with humans and being fed. it landed on the balcony and grabbed a beak full of pate before anyone could do anything. the problem was that they automatically thrash their food to death, so this bird thrashes the pate but being soft, it went everywhere. some went into my mate's eye and he had to go to hospital because of it. not the most glorious and courageous injury...

ernie els is south African, not an aussie. whole different kettle of killers over there. the bird that you really do need to watch is the cassowary. they do kill people. tear them apart with their claws. modern day velociraptors.

When two bitey things go to war

it is incredible stuff. the spider is about the size of a thumb nail and takes down a snake. here is a vid of the same thing. the snake in the vid, by the way, would have enough venom to kill at least twenty adults, probably more.
