I don't know how a cigar differs after having some rest, so I decided to try one today for the sake of experience and knowledge. Didn't expect much since it's not been in a humidor for a month but to my surprise it was really nice. The burn was 10/10. Sometimes I got a little Por Larranaga type caramel note but I mostly got a nice tobacco, leather, cocoa and earth. Not much sweetness yet. Also got some red pepper in the back of my throat and through the nose... overall a beautiful cigar. Calm and serious, just how I like them. Honestly I could never guess where the tobacco for this cigar is from. If you would've told me its cuban I would believe you! Puerto Rican? Sure! Honduran? Why not. And it will fundamentally make you appreciate the special nature of Cuban tobacco. Which is tobacco that achieves the highest highs. I’ve always mixed the two with a preference for Cubans, but now I’m basically a 100% (apart from smoking through my stock) NC guy now. A magic combo. Got a little hot at the end, but it’s not rested, so hoping that comes good. The sweetness is great. Absolutely loved it. I pull the pig tail off the cap and the draw was perfect. A touch of chocolate and sweetness on the cold draw. The initial lighting was very full and had red pepper on the retro. 1/3: About 1/2” in the red pepper subsided now I just get a touch of pepper on the retro. I am getting a Juan Lopez core of espresso with that touch of sweetness. There’s a touch biscuit, citrus, and smooth earthiness. The smoke has a creamy mouth feel. The body is a little over medium. 2/3: The sweetness has increased a touch. The core is still espresso but a little more chocolatey. Which is great with biscuit flavor I am still getting in the background. Occasionally, I still get citrus notes that really round out the sweetness and chocolate notes. The aroma off the foot smoke is extremely pleasant, but I can’t quite put a finger on what it reminds me off. The smoke still has a nice creamy mouthfeel and I get the occasional red pepper on the retro. The pepper is very faint though 3/3: At the beginning of this third the core has become more chocolate. The pepper has become more prevalent on the retro but it is still pleasant. The background is getting a little less complex and earthy. This leaves a dryer feeling in the mouth, which is interesting with the initial sweetness you get when you puff. The last 1.5” of this cigar has changed to a black coffee core. The sweet notes have faded as the smoke is hotter. Final Thoughts: 90-91 points. The first two thirds were very pleasant. The burn was perfect, the smoke was pleasant and the profile left me satisfied. I wish the last 1.5” was as excellent as I put it down with more than inch left. Actually had a sunny beautiful day down here in Melbourne so couldn't resist firing up an N1 2023 Lanceros. Aroma fresh is dark chocolate. I'm a bit like Hamlet in that I don't really pick out flavours but that might be that my palate is old and affected by too many triple IPA beers. Ha Ha! So, I did a drink match taste test for fun. The N1 started nicely with great burn for first third. The wind got up a little so I moved under the porch. Really enjoyed the second third with the ash hanging on to even out the flavours. Think I liked the last third most - a hint of mint towards the end. Can see how this will round out and edges taken off in a month or two and the chocolate will start to poke through. Still thoroughly enjoyed it. First third drink match winner - Coffee martini, followed by in order - iced coffee with not much milk, bourbon and coke, ginger ale, sparkling water, coke (too sweet), black coffee (too strong bitter), honeycomb porter ( too bitter), strong tea (too astringent) Second and last third winner still coffee martini, close second Pecan Pie bourbon barrel aged imperial pastry stout (at 11.6% you'd think too big but pastry stouts are quite sweet and not bitter. This one worked really well. Also added a complimentary sunny day happy retro late 80's, 90's and early 2000's playlist that brought back memories of my younger days when I had swagger and went to see bands in pubs wearing Levis501's, chambray shirt with white t-shirt underneath, a token celtic symbol necklace with leather strap and a sharp quiff in my strawberry locks. A time pre-woke when the night beckoned and anything was possible. Yes, I'm old. Ha ha! Enjoy. Tight draw, but not too bad. I usually take large rips anyways to have a sizable retrohale. Toothy wrapper. The roll on this is exquisite, perfectly symmetrical. I was expecting something similar to the smoking time of a monte E2, but this thing burns slooowwww. 2nd half: Kicked up a notch. More flavorful for sure. Coffee and leather stayed, cream vanished and replaced with chocolate and nutmeg, and a peppery finish. Got to be honest the nicotine got ahold of me during the final 3rd and had me buzzing a bit. This bundle is going to be tough to age so I may adding another one shortly. I think you and Hamlet hit a home run Rob! I'm gonna let these babies rest for a month, set aside some for my dailies, then set quite a few aside for six months because I know it's gonna age well. I didn't have time to sit down and write my thoughts (I will loop back around eventually and do a writeup in a month) but this has hooked me on the lanceros format. I ended up nubbing it. So much flavor! I definitely suggest to anyone on the fence to try and at least get a split! Mine was quite punchy! In flavour I would say a cross between PL and Upman, which is praise indeed. I got some red pepper too, alongside a rich earthy sweetness. Very consistent build in body as it smoked down. A fair nicotine kick too. For my taste I’ll wait a year before the next one. I had a 2021 Maduro last week and it was excellent: much smoother and sweeter at this stage.
