China negotiating new military training facility in Cuba: Report

Wall Street Journal says talks over new military facility are in late stages, with US officials seeking to intervene.

 

China has been negotiating the creation of a new joint training facility on the Caribbean island nation of Cuba, creating concerns it could lead to the stationing of Chinese troops in the waters off the US, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The newspaper on Tuesday reported that discussions between the two countries are in advanced stages, but had not concluded. The report said the officials from the administration of President Joe Biden have been trying to discourage their Cuban counterparts from finalising the deal.

perhaps you should look at how the US beat china to the punch in securing full and exclusive rights to build bases and station troops in papau new guinea just this week.

the US is also leading the largest unification of western democracies in history, all of which are in lock-step, in support of ukraine. 

it should come as no surprise that cuba would open its doors to the highest bidder that happens to be an adversary of the US. i am no fan of the US cuba policies but i am also wholly unsurprised. i wonder how many more “final warnings” china will issue to the US in the next month.

Or how we beat them(and Russia) to the punch on building a military base in Cuba. I honestly find it humorous that we think we have the right to tell China and Russia that they cant do exactly what we've already done.

Apparently Cuba refuses to cash the lease payment cheques from the US for Guantanamo in protest. 

They should probably take the money this time.

Hegemon's going to hegemon. I need to stay away from foreign policy conversations because past actions from 'leaders' pisses me off so much. Monetarily and politically we were just looking for instant gratification and and overreached to a point that we set it all up to fail in the future.

Although I do think the US is bumbling along in the right direction, I thought that US politics were not permitted for FOH discussion. But … if that’s allowed, I’m  just glad TFG is not behind the driver seat.

 

 

Politics aside (sorta kinda), I wonder what the current generation thinks of the US Cuban Missle Crisis. I guess that should or (may) be appended (1962) — if they’re even informed of it, History has not been a USA strength. However, as a young teenager at that time I can still remember being called to the middle school office and talking to my mother. The news had not spread though our school and I was stunned as I walked back to my classroom. 
       Since discussions are in an “advanced state”, I assume they are coming to an agreement that it is *only* the “stationing of Chinese troops”.

In 2015, President Obama opened up the US Embassy in Havana for the first time in my lifetime. We were finally free to visit the island some 90 miles to the South.

In 2020, afraid that this would be perceived as weakness toward the Cuban government and specifically because they were Obama policies, President Trump closed those channels and the embassy, fearing that the Miami Cuban contingent wouldn't vote for him.
