Colon cancer vs cigar

Been one hell of a month. Went in for a colonoscopy as a prerequisite to get an abdominal hernia repair. Wound up finding cancer in my appendix region of my colon. Rushed me to surgery within a 10 days. Yanked the tumor out along with 47 lymph nodes, 7 of which were cancerous., fixed my hernia and gave me a zipper from my belt line to sternum in the process. Spent a week in the hospital after getting 3 transfusions of blood. Almost no pain after surgery and just taking 500mg plain Tylenol. I meet with oncology on the 11th to find out the chemo plan. Which is going to such. I don’t have anymore weight to loose on my frame for chemo.

 

My question is. Anyone out there go through colon cancer and still smoke cigars? How long before you can have a cigar? Precautions you take before during and after smoking. (Don’t swallow saliva etc). My last cigars a couple weeks was not enjoyable to my digestive tract and really messed with me.

You got this dude! Nicotine has a funky affect on the digestive system, especially as your tolerance has probably notched down significantly over the last 30 days. Give it time and ease into it, there’s no rushing the healing process.

Thanks for the kind words of support everyone. It's been amazing here as well with the number of people reaching out. I got back into snowmobiling this season and really went head first into it. Bought and restored an old sled within 2 months, bought another sled off the showroom floor (ahem! for my wife, yeah will go with that) . I had ordered a big bad azz turbo sled last March and unfortunately it did not come in until after I got the cancer diagnosis. Group of riders (most of us over age 45 but all grew up riding so under the gear one would never guess our age) I go out with in individually or in small groups all showed up day before surgery for a last ride before surgery. Of course I had to take some antibiotics and start my hydration and colon prep taking some mirilax while we were riding that made for some hilarious moments where I would bomb out of site through the trees over a ridge to find a tree to lean against. In all that day I had the most energy to rip the whole day, climbing through steep terrain over fallen trees etc. I was in heaven and just didn't want to stop. Best ride of the season. Everyone hopes to do it again the same time next year to make it an annual event. Gives me something to look forward to next year.

Hope for a full recovery for you my friend. I do not have experience with the C word but I recently had quite an ordeal myself. My surgeon told me that nicotine makes the capillaries smaller and restricts the blood flow, which is a problem for the healing process after surgery. I don’t know the affect of nicotine with the chemo and the cancer but you should definitely ask your doctor.

I had diverticulitis for 10 years, I’d have the occasional flare up once every couple years and I’d spend a week in the hospital on IV antibiotics and then come home. But daily life sucked, I always had stomach issues. I was always told I needed the surgery to remove the diseased part of my large intestine but I was too scared to do it. Finally 2022 my luck ran out and I was hospitalized 3x, went to the ER another 3x. The diverticulitis won and things just shouldn’t bounce back anymore. Surgery was necessary. So I booked the surgery for 11/3/22.

Went in, ended up being a 6-1/2 hour surgery things were much more inflamed than expected - large intestine was stuck to small intestine and abdominal wall. Had to take a piece of my small intestine along with the diseased part of my large intestine (about 13”). But they got what they needed to get. It was robotic but there was a small 3” incision under belly button too.

Well this was just the beginning. While recovering in the hospital I had some major internal bleeding. So they wheeled me back in for surgery #2 to fix that. Few days later while in the hospital recovering still, the large intestine that they reattached came undone and started leaking all the bad stuff inside. I went into septic shock. Surgery #3. Came out with an ostomy bag on my small intestine. While recovering from that ordeal, the large intestine opened up again. Septic again. Surgery #4. This time came out with an ostomy bag on my large intestine too. This all happened within a matter of 2 weeks. 4 surgeries and septic twice. Two ostomy bags. That little 3” incision under my belly button? It grew to 8” probably similar to yours. But it wasn’t a neat zipper, they basically carved me up and it was 3-1/2” wide. I spent 31 days in the hospital and it was friggin awful. I’m heading in the right direction now. I’ll have to go back in the fall to have these bags reversed and hopefully get my normal life back!

So I went 6 months without a cigar. Finally had my first one last week and it was just ok. Still think mentally I’m nervous about it and I couldn’t enjoy it. I hope your doctor gives you the thumbs up and you can enjoy one. And don’t get discouraged keep kicking butt, the body is an incredible thing and it will fight like hell. Good luck my friend.
