Ken Gargett Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 what is wrong with people? i would be very grateful if someone left standing when i fall off the perch would be so kind as to ensure that the headstone ends in a full stop. Spare me! just received this. although the sentence did not come with a full stop so i added one. While older texters may consider the full stop an innocent symbol indicating that a sentence has ended, digital natives consider it a triggering form of aggression. https://nypost.com/2020/08/24/young-people-dont-trust-anyone-who-use-this-punctuation-mark/amp/ 1

Baccy Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 I CONSIDER THIS TO BE MUCH MORE AGGRESSIVE THAN USING A PERIOD. 3 1

BrightonCorgi Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 Screw 'em. I'll punctuate as close to the Queen's English as I can. 2
helix Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 Its only because they do not know how to properly apply punctuations. LOL! Falsely fabricate or insinuate a negative connotation for something just to then be offended by same fabricated fallacy. 🤨
BigGuns Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 So what are, we supposed to do. with punctuation, if a text! is more than one sentence long; Just have a long rambling: nonsensical thought that requires, some sort of decoding device~ As long as we're at it. misuse of punctuation) in general, DRIVES ME INSANE. /rant get off my lawn 1 2
JohnS Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 I'm proud of you, Ken. We need to put a full stop to this nonsense! 😂 1 3
NSXCIGAR Posted March 25, 2023 Posted March 25, 2023 Why just punctuation? All modern languages developed in areas with slavery and racism. Time for an entirely new language designed by the Columbia University Department of Social Sciences. They can finally eliminate these pesky words like "man" and "woman". 3
generalnegroni Posted March 25, 2023 Posted March 25, 2023 I’m a millennial, I’ll translate. The younger generations do understand grammar, just if you’re sending a lot of messages, the return key often does the work of the comma, semicolon, full stop, etc. already. The full stop is superfluous when each message is already a self-contained phrase clearly delineated from the preceding and following messages. In this context, many young people write shorter messages and do not punctuate. If someone who normally does not finish their messages with a full stop begins adding full stops, changing their normal omission, that can denote an additional finality to the message. It implies that their mind is made up, a reply is not expected, and the conversation is over. This is generally received as hostile, since most messaging conversations have no natural beginning or end and can span days or weeks. if you normally punctuate your messages diligently, no one is going to read hostility in your writing style, but if someone who normally doesn’t adds a full-stop, that can suggest confrontation. 2 1

Hey the Koch brothers just made a big donation to Penn to start a Cranky White Guys studies department - I’m sure I can snag you a visiting professorship if you’re free! Guys, I’ve never met a Millenial or Gen-Z person who believes any of this nonsense. Just because they can find three idiots does not make it an actual trend. 6

I'd accept that they don't necessarily hold the opinions strongly or consider themselves activists but you're going to get lots of Millennial/Z agreeing that "microaggressions" exist, certain speech can be violence and gender is a social construct, etc. When push comes to shove they're going to err on the wrong side of these debates. You simply cannot go through 12 years of public school since 2000 without getting some of this stuff imparted. 20 hours ago, generalnegroni said: younger generations do understand grammar, just if you’re sending a lot of messages, the return key often does the work of the comma, semicolon, full stop, etc. already... 20 hours ago, generalnegroni said: I’m a millennial We allow your kind here? 1 1

But I suspect Ken's non-capitalization is the result of an inability to simultaneously hit 2 keys, rather than a conscious action born of an ideological stance. Although he may well be protesting the diminution of the individual or humanity in general. Possibly. Possibly? Possibly Possibly 🙂 1
