Spaceman Spiff Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 Typically I spend most of my free time reading about Web Development stuff so I don't have a lot of personal time to read for fun. However, I booked a cabin for the gf, the dogs and I for the last week of June this year and this is the first of of what will probably be a few books I'll read on that vacation!
Bijan Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 Entirely too many books. But one that I think will be good is Winston Churchill's 6 volume history "The Second World War". Though I've just started. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Second_World_War_(book_series) Also read about half to 2/3 of H. G. Well's A Short History of the World, and am about to start his longer The Outline of History. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Short_History_of_the_World_(Wells_book) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Outline_of_History One lighter book I read recently and zoomed through was "Surrounded by Idiots" by Thomas Erikson. It's about the DISC test / assessment: https://www.surroundedbyidiots.com/en/books/surrounded-by-idiots/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DISC_assessment A great book I'm still reading (or rather re-reading) is "A Theory of Language and Information. A Mathematical Approach." by Zellig Harris. It's from 1991, but pretty close to the theory behind current generative AIs, as it is a description of language in terms of probability distribution of words as a function of other words, plus very basic grammatical rules on word combinations, ordering, etc. https://global.oup.com/academic/product/a-theory-of-language-and-information-9780198242246?cc=gb&lang=en& Also reading the Hebrew Bible, and have made it to 1 Kings. I anticipate steady progress until I hit the major prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel). 3
PuroDiario Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 Empire of Pain is the one I am with now, very interesting story that will raise eye brows about the Sackler dynasty. last two before this one were: the Power Broker, about Bob Mosses and NYC is rough, but if you like NYC is a great read. bernardo de Gálvez: Spanish hero in the American revolution. Such a great story that my country has forgotten about not sure why.
Ford2112 Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 Plotting which lakes to fish once all this rain subsides and the snow in the sierras melts. 1
DikkeSigaar Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 Currently reading: Magnificent Rebels: The First Romantics and the Invention of the Self Good read about a time and place I knew relatively little of previously inspiring me to read more about that time in Europe, especially the French revolution and Napoleon. Like someone else in this thread I usually tend to read most of the catalogue of a writer when I find something I really like. Last year I read most Bernie Gunther novels by Philip Kerr. Also a fan of the works by Haruki Murakami, Ian McEwan, David Mitchell etc. Like a previous poster also read most of Hiaasen's books 😀 Finally I absolutely love, love, anything written by Bill Bryson.
