I'm about halfway through a 2017 box, and there have been hints of that fabled caramel, but man most of them have been harsh. Open draws, tight draws. I want to love them but so far I mostly get "final third" flavors. To define - a short list of cigars do I nub, as into the final third that build up and harshness just isn't for me.

Any tips or tricks on unlocking that caramel greatness? I'm ready for the next 25 or so to wow me!

2017 wasn't the most impressive year compared to 13-15 and late 2019 to now. Could just be a bunk box with a few decent ones mixed in.

Sorry to hear. Being a fairly cheap cab, they sometimes do not get the love from the blenders that they need. Especially when crops are thin. I have 2020 box that I'm not so hopeful for, but we'll see

I get a strong taste of graphite from them.  Had 3 or 4 boxes.  Gave them up.  Course that was al 2017 and 2018 boxes.  I'm not much of a skinny lover (despite smoking a lancero nudie as I write this) anyhow.

Have a 21 box that's already good. The harshness to me sounds like a bad box?

Yep, sounds like a bad cab to me especially with the construction issues. 4-5 years is plenty for PLPC to start cooking.

They may still come around, but it might just be 2017 being 2017.

All you can sensibly do is leave them for a few more years and then try again. They may never be great, but there’s no point in smoking them now if you know they don’t taste right to you.
