My oldest daughter graduates high school in June so the wife and I are taking her to Spain the first or second week in July. I’m comfortable doing all planning, tours, etc. on my own but the ladies want guided tours, itinerary, transportation, etc. We want Barcelona, Madrid, Sevilla, Granada. Any recommendations for tour companies?

While in Madrid definitely go to eat at El Senador, which is literally across the street from their Senate building. Very very good grub. Lunch or dinner you can’t miss. We found a lot of our tours on viator.com but my wife is the one who does all the planning. We did take a day tour to Avila and Segovia which is beautiful. That aqueduct still standing after so many years is an absolute thing to see. There was one other restaurant in Madrid that was exceptional. It’s called La Cabaña Argentina, Google it. The ribeye steak was so good. Hope this helps a little.

I haven’t used a tour company in Spain, but have enjoyed a few trips there. For dining, try to avoid places with a picture of the food in front of the restaurant, especially if it’s in English.  You will get a much more authentic experience in the local type restaurants.  The people are very nice there so you can ask for help if needed.  They eat lunch at 2 and dinner at 10.  Try to adjust your schedule to embrace this.

The traditional beer experience is called a Caña.  It is a small glass of their house beer (1 of about 3 Spanish beers).  Walk in to any bar and ask for a Caña.  Very simple and tasty.  Many places in Madrid will give you a free tapa with your drink.

Spain is so beautiful.  I enjoyed simply strolling the old districts and pausing for a rest or a cigar in one of the many historic plazas (pronounced ‘platha’).

When in Barcelona, don’t miss La Sagrada Familia.  Absolutely stunning.  Beyond imagination.  You can reserve entrance times online.  I suggest the morning when the sunrise lights up the eastern stained glass.

Most importantly, grab all the cigars you can!  You can find singles at any of the multitude Tobaco stalls.  Look for a ‘Cava’ to find a more traditional cigar store.

I hope you and your family have a great trip.
