Rome, Dec 22 (Prensa Latina) The specialized magazine Forbes Italia chose the Santiago de Cuba rum among the best in the world and recommended its readers to prefer it in 2023, due to its high quality.

By including this liqueur among the chosen ones, the publication highlighted its ‘decisive flavor, combined with sublime notes that can offer extraordinary experiences to the palate.’

It added that this rum, widely known all over the world, ‘requires no introduction,’ and pointed out that among its merits is the distillation method developed in Cuba.

The Santiago de Cuba rum is made, bottled, and distilled only in the city of the same name, in eastern Cuba, at the country’s first and oldest rum factory, which dates back to 1862, Italian expert Federico Silvio Bellanca wrote in an article.

Bellanca, who is considered one of the most authoritative pens in Italy in the field of liquors and the author of four books on the subject, pointed out that the aging of this rum is 100 percent natural, and is done in selected and very old white oak barrels, some of which are more than 70 years old.

‘The heat and humidity of the tropics naturally accelerate the evaporation of the alcohol and the fusion with the woody substances,’ explained this expert, who particularly recommended ‘the 11-years-old Extra Añejo, which is aged for 11 years in white oak barrels.’

The intense flavor and aroma transmit unique sensations typical of a quality product, dry but with an intense, smooth and balanced aftertaste,’ said Bellanca, who attributes this exquisiteness to the fact that this liquor is the result of a ‘synthesis of the great experience of the rum masters’ of Santiago de Cuba.

Rum people, how does this brand compare to Havana Club?

Everyone you’ll meet swears by the 11, if you can find it. The Anejo is definitely a step above HC Anejo Especial.

From my little experience with the 11, it's excellent.  I have far more experience with Santiago 12 though, and I think it's far superior to Havana Club.  The 12 for me has an almost Briney/Sea Salt/Ocean kind of note to it, and it mixes so well with the rest of the Rum's caramel & toffee profile.  It does extremely well as a sipper to me, whereas I find HC Anejo Especiale & HC 7 to be excellent mixers, but I'm not keen on them as sippers.  The HC Seleccion de Maestros is a good sipper though
