BrightonCorgi Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 Are any of you following the elections in Brazil? My town is like "Brasilnho" and this election is quite the big deal. Interesting to see how this plays out.
99call Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 Glad to see Bolsonaro has been kicked to the curb, and the Amazon start to recover. 2 1
shokao Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 I’m currently living in Brazil and things are getting crazier by the hour. Bolsonaro is the stupidest person on Earth and he is following Trump steps. He don’t want to acknowledge his defeat, his silence and lack of sense it’s scaling tensions in our society and the people are the ones who will lose, no matter what. He should do what everyone did before him: leave the office and acknowledge his defeat. I’m glad he is out. Can’t wait to January 1st so we can erase him from our history once for all. 1
BrightonCorgi Posted November 2, 2022 Author Posted November 2, 2022 @shokao Around here, Bolonsaro is a hero. Like Obama & Trump rolled up in one. So many have their cars wrapped in Bolsonaro livery and signs at their houses.

But once you start LIVING here you understand in a blink of an eye why he lost the election. His action privileges only rich people, he usually slaves the poor and take a big dump on minorities heads. He says he is Christian - which I am by the way - but sometimes I feel like he is the Devil himself. 3 1

Catholics are being replaced by Pentecostal.

Is this happening everywhere or just here? I don’t have a specific religion per se, have my own faith and feelings about Christ. A decade ago Catholics were the majority here but Pentecostal churches start expanding and now they’re everywhere. He uses this public at his favor saying he is in favor of patriotism, family, God and freedom, which he is not. In the past there is recorded TV interviews where he says he hates homosexuals, that women should stay in home and take care of the family, that if he had a homosexual son he would beat him until he turns straight and a lot of other absurds. During the pandemic the press asked him about the Covid deaths and he said: “So what? I don’t work at a cemitery” and even impressed someone dying by lack of oxygen in one of his cruel jokes. Everything I said it’s on tape and you can watch at YouTube if you have the stomach for it.

There's Pentecostal on nearly every block and only a couple of Catholic parishes. I guess about 30% of the population in my town is Brazilian. Can live here with just Portuguese with no problem.
Arabian Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 Nothing major in the Gulf region. The only thing matters here is the U.S election, Tend to have the largest impact.

BoliDan Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 Bolsonaro is now trying to get military to intervene in what was clearly a loss to him and his supporters are fine with that. Absolutely disgusting how people accept what is clearly misinformation and come to support tyrants. in other news. There is this Brazilian BBQ place near me that guarantees the meat sweats, and this thread gave me a hankering for it. I'm going to meat town baby! 2
BrightonCorgi Posted November 2, 2022 Author Posted November 2, 2022 Paper ballots only! I think Brazil had an issue with electronic voting before.

They could use all the protection tools banks use for encryption, hashing, data transfer etc... They only people losing their accounts in banking are people dumb enough to give their banking info to the Nigerian Prince email. So, some may fall victim to the Nigerian Prince that needs your voter access key I suppose...

I wouldn't think so from a security standpoint. Both options should be in play. You want to go in, stand in a line, pass the coloured party clowns handing out paraphenalia.......go for it. You want to stay home, access your unique pass, log in and vote....go for it. Paper voting is only as solid as the acuracy of the rolls, the ID standard at the casting of the vote and the post voting security of the votes. Online voting has it's own issues but it is not a new world of tech. IMHO, both should be offered. 1

We have never - EVER - had issues with electronic voting before. Our process is a role model for every country in world. The military audited the whole thing BEFORE the elections and found nothing, zero, NADA. Brazil is the fastest country in the world to announce president elections. There is a hoax initiated by Trump and some supporters creating fake news around electronic vote that was never proved. What it’s the most annoying thing of all is that Bolsonaro himself was elected by electronic voting against the same party in 2018 and won. 🤡 Oh, I see now. The problem happens only when he loses just as Trump. When he wins, everything it’s fine. 🫠

Rather than a paper system prone to human error and major corruption since after you vote, you don't know what happened in the actual count.

Is it the potential for error or fraud we’re talking about? Or something more sinister?

Rather than a paper system prone to human error and major corruption since after you vote, you don't know what happened afterward. The issue is as much about public trust in the system as it is actual practical advantage. That’s why there has been a movement back towards use of paper ballots tallied by machine - as someone who originally voted on a machine with no paper trail, I see paper ballots as the most secure form of voting that people will trust. Oddly enough though, the people most suspicious of the move were Black communities - the ones most likely to be diddled under the old system. I was running for office in the first election post-change and was really surprised how often I heard that, even though in retrospect it does make sense. There are people in my country whose attitude now is tautological - the fact that we lost proves it’s rigged. Such people won’t trust any system if they don’t like the results. Hence Bolsonaro’s and Trump’s claims the the election would be rigged before it even happened - the only way it could be disproven is by winning (and even when Trump won he still claimed the election was rigged.)

The 2000 and 2004 Presidential elections are two examples. There was also the 2016 Georgia governor's race--I believe the Democrat candidate never conceded and claimed she had been robbed. Then there is the 2016 Presidential election--something about "Russian tampering". My only point is that claims about rigged elections are made by both sides--and deserve to be fairly heard--by both sides. 1
