rydhandley Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 Hi all, I know this topic has been beaten to death and I’ve spent quite a bit of time researching prior to posting (including the mold study here). From what I understand, mold can be easily wiped off. This substance does not come off easily at all. I even took a fingernail to it (gross sorry) and it stays on. Can someone please help/guide me in understanding what’s going on here?
ha_banos Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 You can try capping it and see if its in the body of the cigar. You can always send it into the FOH test lab? 1
Edicion Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 Possible that it's not the first mold outbreak on these, wiped down a few times, dried out, and whatever is on them now comes from the leaves themselves, and sorry looks like they've gone too far, at least for my taste. 1
BrightonCorgi Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 Doesn't look bad to me. I'd smoke them.
DaBoot Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 Could be some glue from the fingers of the roller. Older sticks I notice the white coming out more on the wrapper 1 1
joeypots Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 If there isn’t any mold in the foot of the cigar I’d wipe it off the cigar and have at them. 2

rydhandley Posted November 1, 2022 Author Posted November 1, 2022 Thanks all. I’m going to cut into the cap and a little into the foot to examine.

Some samples that we had tested consisted of fine particles that hung on stubbornly. They came back from testing as just another form of mold. 1

I took a wet paper towel to brush it off, and a good amount of the substance came off with some harder scrubbing. I think the reasonable conclusion is mold, or (hopefully but seemingly less likely) glue as @DaBoot said.
Hammer Smokin' Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 what caused the mold? Increased Temps combined with increased RH? Combo of both? One or the other?

Hammer Smokin' Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 oh those are newly purchased?! that sucks bad!

Glass Half Full Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 In case it's helpful (and BTW also learned from FOH), I have used a vodka wipe down to solve a similar problem from some aged cigars that arrived in less than ideal shape. After that, I set those aside -- isolated -- in a tupperware with a 62% boveda and, after a few weeks, all was well. Hope that's helpful.

I read here to use distilled water instead of alcohol because alcohol can destroy the oils on the cigar. Any idea if that's true?

Drink the vodka. Gently wipe clean the mold on the cigar wrapper. 4 10
