Week #29: Moneyball

Moneyball is a 2011 American sports drama film directed by Bennett Miller and written by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin. The film is based on the 2003 nonfiction book by Michael Lewis, an account of the Oakland Athletics baseball team's 2002 season and their general manager Billy Beane's attempts to assemble a competitive team. In the film, Beane (Brad Pitt) and assistant general manager Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), faced with the franchise's limited budget for players, build a team of undervalued talent by taking a sophisticated sabermetric approach to scouting and analyzing players.

Columbia Pictures bought the rights to Lewis's book in 2004, hiring Stan Chervin to write the screenplay. David Frankel was initially set to direct with Zaillian now writing the screenplay, but was soon replaced by Steven Soderbergh, who planned to make the film in a semi-documentary style featuring interviews from real athletes, and having the real players and coaches on the team portray themselves. But before its July 2009 filming start, the film was put in turnaround due to creative differences between Soderbergh and Sony over a last-minute script rewrite. Soderbergh exited, and Miller was hired to direct, with Pitt becoming a producer and Sorkin hired for rewrites. Filming began in July 2010 at various stadiums such as Dodger Stadium and Oakland Coliseum.

Moneyball premiered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival and was released on September 23, 2011, to box office success and critical acclaim, particularly for its acting and screenplay. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor for Pitt and Best Supporting Actor for Hill.

Honestly man? Top 5 baseball movies ever made. Especially because it wasn't necessarily about the players, but about the business and team management of baseball which hadn't been done (to my knowledge).

Amazing casting choice, everyone kills it.

9/10 and extremely rewatchable.

Did not care for this movie. It neglected to mention the stars already on the roster, mainly their incredible starting rotation that were integral in that team's success. I also hated how they portrayed Art Howe. Probably one of the most decent men in baseball and they portray him as a money grubbing buffoon. I was conflicted because I was and still a fan of Phillip Seymour Hoffman (r.i.p.).

Moneyball is a solid film. Brad Pitt and Jonah hill do a great job to keep your attention. The film also captures the atmosphere of the A’s perfectly, a Major league team that’s a farm team for the big dogs. It’s also why it was so damn fun to cheer them on when they’d have one of their scrappy runs - hard not to cheer for the underdog against the Yankees.

These last few years have been tough as an A’s fan. All but certain that mgmt is ready to skip town. as long as Bob Melvin was coaching, I knew they would compete - I hope he gets a shot with the Padres.

Anyhow, I rarely rewatch films - but if I am surfing around and moneyball  is on, I’m likely finishing it. 9/10.

I very much enjoyed this movie because it took the mathematical approach of sabermetrics in baseball and presented it in a movie. Great cast but I would have to agree about Art Howe being misrepresented. Despite that, it's a 9 out of 10 film.

Great movie. The old guys had it right… “he’s got an ugly girlfriend. An ugly girlfriend means no confidence.” Would be interesting to rank top 5 movies by sport.

I think it’s a very good big budget Hollywood movie. And since I’m not into the super hero rollercoaster special effects sequel ad nauseam thing I enjoyed it a lot. 8/10

I really enjoyed this movie a lot but I don't put it up there with movies I'd call great.  Entertaining, good acting, good dialog, nice story 9/10.  Favorite scene:
