Popular Post Ken Gargett Posted August 7, 2022 Popular Post Posted August 7, 2022 I have been very fortunate to enjoy some incredible wine days. this ranks right up with the very best. Started with an old friend back in town, Didier Mariotti, chef de cave at Veuve Clicquot (when last here, he was with Mumm - appeared on Spitbucket and remembered that very fondly - apparently it was very different to pretty much anything he'd ever done before). so there was a big Veuve dinner on Friday night. Didier arranged for some magnums of the 1990 Veuve La Grande Dame to be disgorged and flown out. one of the greatest champagnes imaginable. and then the following day, some friends had a brilliant lunch up at Maleny. it was a line up of some of the greatest champagnes i've ever enjoyed. great food, company, wine, location. brilliant day. (i brought a 1996 Krug but it did not even make the cut - gives you an idea of the day). we kicked off with a couple of warm-up cleansers, and forgive me, i did not even get to take pics of them. Delamotte blanc de blancs 2007 and Deutz Blanc de Blancs 2009. the we got into the serious stuff. Started with a near mythical champagne - Pierre Peters Heritage. i had heard of it but never imagined i'd see it. based on the 2010 Chetillons with reserve material from 1921, 1947, 1959, 1964, 1966, 1969, 1973, 1976, 1979, 1982, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1996, 2002, 2004 and 2006. Then when too much Dom Perignon is never enough. we had a comparison between the Dom 93 and the Dom 93 Oenotheque. extraordinary stuff. surprisingly, marginally preferred the initial release. then a magnificent magnum of Dom Perignon 1978, disgorged in 1998. last year saw the release of an incredibly rare bottle from Piper Heidsieck. their Horie Series 1971, which spent a mindboggling 48 years on lees. it has been way too many years since i saw a Bollinger VVF. largely because they are so rare and expensive. this was the 1992. back to Dom with the Dom Perignon Rose 1988 (my favourite vintage). then the Krug 1988. take me now lord. in honour of Didier attending, we needed something special from Veuve - the 1964. and finally, one of the greatest champagnes ever made, the Salon 1996. 27 2
BrightonCorgi Posted August 7, 2022 Posted August 7, 2022 Doesn't get much better for a Champagne event than that... Very impressive. My wife and I usually have Champagne on Sundays and we call it "Champagne Sunday" as well. Usually a friend comes by so we can open additional bottle. 1
