El Presidente Posted July 4, 2022 Posted July 4, 2022 I saw this piece of advice in an article today. I haven't tried it as yet but maybe you would like to give it a crack on some of the cheaper cutters at hand and report back if you notice any difference. Deburr the Cigar Cutter With Aluminum Foil Deburring is a simple and inexpensive way to sharpen your cigar cutter. It involves buffing the blades with an aluminum foil to remove any build-up and smooth out imperfections. To deburr the blades, roll up some aluminum foil into the shape of a cigar. Then take the cutter and cut through the aluminum roll as many times as possible. If the blades are too blunt, you may need to create another aluminum roll and repeat the process. The idea is to deburr the blade as much as possible to remove any build-up, straighten bent edges and eliminate imperfections. https://studybreaks.com/thoughts/how-to-sharpen-a-cigar-cutter/
Popular Post cgoodrich Posted July 4, 2022 Popular Post Posted July 4, 2022 Nope, totally disagree (although I’ve never tried it…). Every time you cut anything with a sharpened edge it breaks off a bit of the fine edge point, and will continue to become “rough/rounded”. Even the best high carbon steel will loose it’s edge to cleanly cut, although slowly compared to less quality of steel. Aluminum foil is flimsy and week in a thin state, but as you compact it you increase its ability to resist being severed by a sharp edge. Also, aluminum tends to leave bits of itself behind, called galling, and continues to build up through repetitive contact pressure/friction. There are ways to prevent galling, but that is a wholly different subject about CNC machining. To sharpen an edge you need a substance with properties able to remove the surface of the steel, i.e. sharpening stones, diamond, and harder steels. Just my 2¢… 5 1

Rhinoww Posted July 5, 2022 Posted July 5, 2022 Like @BTWheezy and other woodworkers I spend some time working on ways to sharpen an edge. Cutting with it is not a way I have ever heard of sharpening an edge. Now if the issue is cleaning tar or residue off of the back of a blade, the aluminum foil might make sense. There are those that use balls of foil to clean all sorts of things, including grill grates.
