ElJavi76 Posted June 6, 2022 Posted June 6, 2022 Working in technology I’ve been around plenty of outsourcing and it’s a mixed bag. Smaller projects with lose timelines… ok they can generally pull this off. We’re in the middle of swapping out our entire customer billing system and oh boy are we having fun. When you’ve got 15-18 edge systems all feeding off one backend system with an infinite amount of business rules you end up with a circus. Decisions get made as to what is or isn’t important to include in Day 1 release. It’s nauseating!! So this idea that just cause we can work remotely that quality and attention to detail will be there… all I’ll say is you get what you pay for. I feel like requirements gathering turns into a game of telephone. By the time testing cycles come around you start to see the absolute lack of communication that happens with these outsourcing outfits. Unrelated but in the same vein… I opened a ticket 8 days ago to get a port opened on a Linux server. I’m still waiting. We’ve also outsourced our IT desk and the part I love is the people who make these decisions don’t have to get on a phone to open ticket with folks that have no idea what they’re doing. I’ve opened tickets, gotten a resource assigned, and then found myself giving these guys the exact syntax on what I need them to do. Fail!!! Knowing your business and your business needs does not translate well at all. 2
jaybo41 Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 I've been a remote employee for probably 14-15 years. I love it, keeps mileage down on my vehicle and with the ridiculous prices of fuel, it saves me money there as well. I really believe it comes down to two things. 1. What you do and 2. can you remain disciplined. I personally find myself working longer days, starting earlier, working through lunch at my desk and working into the evening more often than not. Some days I can stop early, some days I can get small chores done while I have a break between work. Again, all about discipline and sticking to it. The thought of going into an office once again for me is not something I want to entertain--this has nothing to do with Covid. Love the flexibility working at home offers to me. 3

Lamboinee Posted August 12, 2022 Posted August 12, 2022 My work from home time significantly increased within the past 5 months. It's been jarring. Biggest complaints include: the decreased interaction, and 2) not going to the office seems to destroy what many have called my "tendency to compulsively engage in work related activities for extended durations of time". I used to love work and the act of working. So far, I do not care for this much work from home time. If I could pick up one good habit (e.g. exercise) during all my new free time it would probably be ok. But I have become more reclusive and less active. During the pandemic I could not relate too many of my friends and their perspectives about being forced to work from home due to covid. Some of the difficulties they shared are certainly true and some are less true. Personally, I am not as productive on the whole when working from home for this much of my work week. I believe that is partially related to my line of work and partially to the fact that I have a lot cooler stuff to play with at home then I do at the office. I find, overall, this much work-from-home time is not my optimum arrangement. Ironically, some of the consequences of my arrangement led me to really get into cc's, start a real collection, and, inevitably, to find and join this forum which has been pretty dam enjoyable so far (I'm a veteran with like almost 2.5 weeks experience on this forum) ... So maybe work from home is good? Idk. Maybe God closed the laundry hamper and opened up the mail slot? I think what I want is not 1) work from office, or 2) work from home, or even 3) work from home and office. Rather, what I truly want is to never not ever work from not anywhere for anyone at anytime. Yeah. What job is the not work from anywhere job? I should probably just be grateful for the chance to have these issues. Nevertheless, I appreciate this forum for providing a new means of exploration and communication! 2

BrightonCorgi Posted August 12, 2022 Posted August 12, 2022 I've been working from home (or onsite at customer if not at home) for about 15 years. I miss going to the office when I am working out of town. Working at home is the norm for my industry (cyber security) and my customers are 24-7 in every time zone. There will never be a good time to schedule a meeting between EST and India or Singapore 😞 Knowing when to call it day or shut off the monitor is important. I will respond to easy or critical stuff after hours. Working from home and flexible PTO sound great on the surface, but end up screwing workers by offering less paid benefits and more hours worked.
