That works by turning the ring, the hammer lift and falls, striking a percussion cap paper and igniting the fuel soaked wick. Not sure what the ball on the end is for; maybe you pull the wick back down and the ball extinguishes the lit end?

According to the legend, the last person who did that successfully was in 1904 before starting to focus on his next project, the theory of relativity.

Where does the fuel come from?  Walking around with a fuel soaked wick leaching into ones pocket sounds adventurous/insane.

Actually found out that the rope is not soaked in kero or fuel. The hemp or cotton rope is the fuel source. There is no flame with this rope lighter, it has a burning ember on the end. That is why it has the metal ball on the end, to crush and extinguish the burning ember.

I have seen other lighters that had the rope soaked in kero/fuel and stored in a separate compartment. Those had a flame. Something like this Amorce lighter.

Impressed it can spark such a thick piece of rope with a cap role, must be significantly more powerful than that cap gun from my youth.  I'm with PigFish, just not as classy with my vertigo cyclone.

You need to char the end of the rope to prep it, otherwise it won't light.
