El Presidente Posted February 28, 2022 Posted February 28, 2022 This one is important only for the fact that Cuba-Russia flights is how the majority of Cuban cigars are currently leaving Cuba. Aeroflot cancels flights to Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico and US Moscow, Feb 28 (Prensa Latina) Russian airline Aeroflot today reported the cancellation of its flights to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and the United States from February 28 to March 2 due to the closure of Canadian airspace. According to the airline, Aeroflot’s transatlantic flights to and from Moscow to the following destinations are suspended: Cuba (Havana-SU150/151, Varadero-SU154/155); Dominican Republic (Punta Cana-SU156/157). The same applies to Mexico (Cancun-SU158/159); and the United States (Los Angeles-SU108/109; Miami-SU110/111; New York-SU102/103 and SU124/125; Washington-SU104/105). Aeroflot informed that the forced refund can be made at the place where the ticket was purchased. It stressed that updated information on other flights on these routes will be published on the airline’s Internet platform and on its official accounts in social networks. According to the Association of Russian Tour Operators (Atorus), the Russian flag carrier does not include in its sales for the next few days trips to Varadero and Havana, in Cuba; Cancun, in Mexico; nor to the U.S. cities of New York, Los Angeles and Miami. On Aeroflot’s Internet platform, there are no “available flights” to Varadero until March 27 and to the Cuban capital until March 29, in the case of Cancun until March 27. Experts point out that given the uncertain situation, the closure of Canadian skies and the low demand for travel in general, flights on the dates that are still available may be cancelled. The closure of Canadian airspace is part of a broad package of punitive measures taken by the United States, United Kingdom, European Union and other countries over Russia’s military operation in Ukraine since Feb. 24.
riderpride Posted February 28, 2022 Posted February 28, 2022 And Cuba's exports and tourism continues to suffer. Let's hope this is short lived for 🇺🇦 and 🇨🇺 Cheers 2
Corylax18 Posted February 28, 2022 Posted February 28, 2022 It was only a matter of time after airspaces started being shutdown. What I haven't seen yet is reports of the affects of Russian airspace being closed. Pre pandemic, Siberian airspace (and the over flight fees) where a HUGE asset for Russia. Its damn near impossible to get from Europe to northern Asia without flying through Russia.
Chas.Alpha Posted February 28, 2022 Posted February 28, 2022 Bad map: No more Sweden, Finland or Norway airspace. Must move the line over the pole... Iceland, Greenland still possible. US East coast. Really?...

A flight coming from Moscow to Miami Violated Canadian airspace yesterday/last night actually. The Canadians had a problem with it, but not us......... That plane still landed in Miami with no trouble. As we see by this announcement, it doesnt really matter at this point, our airspace is affectively blocked up by everyone else that shut it down.

I hope they’re diverting the flights from Havana. I’ll meet you there! 😬

I'm being extremely optimistic and trying to find any silver lining here. Hopefully this extra short term pain leads to some kind of long term gain. Hopefully. China is still a problem though, a big problem. 13 hours ago, Chas.Alpha said: Curious. I would be surprised if we officially made the announcement though, again, there is no real utility in it. A flight from Moscow to NYC turned back over Greenland about an hour after the Miami flight had left to go back to Moscow. With this announcement, the tap is now closed anyway.
Chas.Alpha Posted February 28, 2022 Posted February 28, 2022 Unfortunate for us. Selfishly, I think of my own comfort. Globally, I am so proud of our planet for condemning this humanitarian outrage. Even the Russian soldiers don’t want to do this. Maybe, the era of the human despot will finally come to an end. Hard to tell from here... 1

US is home to the UN which creates a trickier situation when it comes to closing airspace for foreign flights. Still possible but not as straightforward.
Rhinoww Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 These past two years have reinforced my hoarding instincts. Russia has a few cards left to play. The nuke card and the nuke card in Cuba being some of the hotter button ones. Neither one will result in a more open supply of CC, if I stay on task to limit discussions to cigar topics and try to stay away from politics.
