TorontoMadeTJM Posted February 28, 2022 Posted February 28, 2022 Hi all, Was wondering what everyone thinks about aging cigars such as Behikes, Esplendidos and the likes within their cardboard boxes and/or lacquered/varnished boxes. I have read that the lacquer/varnish coating on the box prevents humidity from transferring in/out so they do not age as well unless you prop the boxes open a little bit. I have also seen some concern for aging cigars in cardboard packaging. What would you fine aficionados suggest?
Popular Post NSXCIGAR Posted February 28, 2022 Popular Post Posted February 28, 2022 Threads addressing aging and ambient airflow: The consensus has been for a while that the longer one intends to age the less ambient airflow is desired. By long term we're talking at least 8 years. Anything less, ambient airflow is pretty much a non-factor. As far as factory packaging it has been understood that the varnished 8-9-8 box is the most conducive to long-term aging, followed by the foil packaging and then the varnished boite nature box. The 8-9-8 is preferred over the more airtight varnished BN or tubes because of it's high cigar-to-cigar contact nature. Slide lid box, dress box and semi boite nature are considered highly ineffective at reducing ambient airflow, although SLB would have the advantage of high cigar-to-cigar contact. I guess this can all be avoided by vacuum sealing your boxes, a luxury few had 40 years ago. 3 7
