Hi all,

Was wondering what everyone thinks about aging cigars such as Behikes, Esplendidos and the likes within their cardboard boxes and/or lacquered/varnished boxes.

I have read that the lacquer/varnish coating on the box prevents humidity from transferring in/out so they do not age as well unless you prop the boxes open a little bit. I have also seen some concern for aging cigars in cardboard packaging.

What would you fine aficionados suggest?

Threads addressing aging and ambient airflow:

The consensus has been for a while that the longer one intends to age the less ambient airflow is desired. By long term we're talking at least 8 years. Anything less, ambient airflow is pretty much a non-factor.

As far as factory packaging it has been understood that the varnished 8-9-8 box is the most conducive to long-term aging, followed by the foil packaging and then the varnished boite nature box. The 8-9-8 is preferred over the more airtight varnished BN or tubes because of it's high cigar-to-cigar contact nature.

Slide lid box, dress box and semi boite nature are considered highly ineffective at reducing ambient airflow, although SLB would have the advantage of high cigar-to-cigar contact.

I guess this can all be avoided by vacuum sealing your boxes, a luxury few had 40 years ago.

Awesome, information. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
