anacostiakat Posted January 24, 2022 Posted January 24, 2022 No it is not the first time. Can not have a tie so you have to do something. I would prefer a quarter of time. If still tied then another quarter ad nauseum. I just find this scheme lacking.

Is it that hard? personally, no drama. tough on the bills but as allen said, if they had got there first, they'd be celebrating. for me, complicated enough. bills had their chance - just defend that first drive. say we change it again and they both score TDs on their first drives in OT. do you then give each of them another opportunity with the ball? and if not, why not? what would be different to the first go? agree it is not perfect but is there a perfect system? 3

avaldes Posted January 24, 2022 Posted January 24, 2022 I'd be in favor of playing a full period of OT. Even if that was 10 minute "quarters." That is enough time for both teams to get a possession an score a touchdown. It is rough and yeah a lot depends on a coin toss. Still fun to watch though.

Luck on the flip of the coin shouldn’t determine if you have a chance to continue competing for a win. What the NFL wants is a winner, preferably by touchdown and not field goal (which was the impetus to change the original rule years ago, which allowed you to win on the first possession with a FG).

The college rules would not be well received. Buffalo had 13 seconds to stop Chiefs with #1 ranked defense...and couldnt. 6
GaryK 54 Posted January 24, 2022 Posted January 24, 2022 There have been 11 playoff games decided under the current OT rules. The team who won the coin toss has won 10 of those games. In 7 of those wins, it was decided during the first possession. Professional football is the only sport (that I know of) where both competitors don’t have an equal offensive opportunity in OT to win. Personally, I prefer the college rule on OT (without the 2 point conversion opportunity after the second possession in OT). Not perfect, but balanced and fair with both teams having an equal opportunity on offense. 3 1

It is sudden death after all and if you don’t want to lose, stop the other team from scoring a TD before you do. Tired of the narrative that winning the coin toss wins you the game. Bills D could have stopped them or held the Chiefs to a FG. They didn’t and they get to go home now. Defense wins championships, not coin tosses. 3

I didnt hear any Bills players or coaches complaining after the game. They had a full hour of regulation football, "didn't get a chance" my ass. They had dozens of chances. Maybe they should have squib kicked it with 13 seconds left. The 5 seconds that took wouldn't have left any time for a field goal. People(journalist, fans sportsbook owners) want more football, more fantasy points, more situations to bet on. That's what this is about. Those two teams could have gone on scoring TDs all night. We had two great quarterbacks and 15 years of rule changes designed to make scoring easier. Yeah, lets just keep changing the rules so they can each score 100 points a game, thats much fairer. 1

Both the above are why I hate watching football now. I need to stay away from my lounge the rest of the week or all I'll hear on TV are blathering idiots tallong about would, coulda, shoulda. Soccer is exciting and 4 points a game is a rarity. I think the issues with football are that it has gotten to the point where dudes are so huge that they could legit kill each other without rules skewed in favor of the offense. And then you do thst and it turns into a shootout. And then there's always whining involved now. Also kinda like soccer.

True, defense has been minimized over the years, but just looking at the other games on the slate defense played a huge part. 49ers holding Aaron Rodgers to 0 points and the Rams for the most part keeping Brady locked up (until the TB defense forced some key turnovers to keep them in the game). Nonetheless, when you have talent like Mahomes and Josh Allen this can be moot

They used to be a fun part of the game but with the new safety rules (which are a good thing) they’ve become almost impossible to recover.
