I pop over to John or Jason's place, they hand me a cigar and I smoke it. Never ask for it, never expect it, but always appreciate it. I in turn bring over a couple bottles of wine (or sometimes cigars) to share. They never ask for it, never expect it, but always appreciate it.

One of our Sydney crew has been out of the cigar game for quite some time, and his stash has unfortunately been reduced significantly. So we just topped him up with a bunch of cigars. Again, he never expected it and was very grateful. We asked for nothing in return because gifting should never be an act where you expect something in return.

Just reciprocate when you can or buy a round.

i have always worked on the basis of trying to bring quality wines that might be a bit different or special for some reason or which i know they are unlikely to have seen. they have always appreciated that.

If you cannot show up or show off with high dollar wines, the only other thing is to show up with is geeky wines which are just as exciting (at least to me and I think you as well).

This general thread has always made me nervous to venture into the world of wine. Price of entry seems prohibitive, and the likelihood of making a faux pas enormous.

I sit around drinking my 20 to 30 dollar California zins and wonder what I'm missing. But then again, those suit me just fine.

Ken invited me to one of these lunches once and then recommended that he purchase/select the bottle of wine that I bring. :D

I declined the invitation.

I love the interaction between you two. Reminds me of me and my best law school buddy.

the truth of what happened was that i offered to bring a bottle or two on his behalf but he declined (i think he was worried they may ask him to pronounce the names).

It's OK. I know you were worried that I may have embarrassed you. I feel the same way when you accompany me at a cigar event and then try to pronounce Ramon Allones.  "Homes Alones" it is not.

There are only a small handful of Ca Zin's that are worth drinking; the majority are barely cooking wines IMO.  $30 for a bottle of wine is not "cheap" either.  Plenty of the geeky wines I alluded to are under $30 all day long.
