Popular Post Ken Gargett Posted January 3, 2022 Popular Post Posted January 3, 2022 i am not making this up. Just came across some of these. No idea if any of these are enforced. In Ohio, you cannot depict Santa Claus in alcohol advertising. In Topeka, wherever that is, wine is not permitted to be served in teacups. In Newton, Pennsylvania, a man cannot purchase alcohol without the written consent of his wife (I suspect the richest people in town are the family lawyers). In Lebanon, New Hampshire, graveyards are dry zones (which is fair enough, but what on earth possessed someone to sit down and think about creating that law? What went on in graveyards in Lebanon?). In North Dakota, it is illegal to serve beer and pretzels at the same time. And my absolute favourite… In Lefors Texas, it is illegal to take more than three sips of beer while standing up. 3 3

This one may be apocryphal: https://criminaldefensetucson.com/north-dakota-pretzels-beer-yes-things-somehow-connected/ That one seemed cruel to me. I can tolerate the others 😉 2

Definitely not enforced. Philadelphia does still enforce an archaic law forbidding bars to serve ice from blocks (which is an old health law because blocks used to be dragged through the street by horses). It’s routinely flaunted but I have spoken with proprietors who’ve been fined for doing so.

The speakeasy cocktail bar boom, which often served drinks with large ice chunks for authenticity, lead to an enforcement drive in the early 2010’s and as a result most of the bars switched to molds that mimic the shape. It’s moronic, and I think complains may have lead to it becoming defunct since some bars are openly doing it again.
Chas.Alpha Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 These are still on the books as well: In Pennsylvania, if a car is approaching a horse the motorist is required to pull over and dismantle his automobile so as not to scare the horse. Best: In Illinois, it is illegal for an organ grinder's monkey to smoke! 1 2

Ford2112 Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 In Carmel California,at one point there was a law forbidding the consumption of ice cream cones. Clint Eastwood was elected mayor and put an end to that nonsense. " are you gonna lick that ice cream or whistle dixie?" 1 3

"Quirks". In other words, good luck finding a person's house at night, and have fun with these directions - "Our house is 3rd northwest from Guadalupe and 6th ,next to the pine tree ,with the garden gnome next to the potted geranium plant"

Chibearsv Posted January 4, 2022 Posted January 4, 2022 It should be illegal to “sip” beer anywhere. Maybe they decided the first couple are forgivable but that third one is crossing the line. 1

By the way, great post Ken! As a lawyer, you certainly understand how the state legislature (in the US) would find it daunting to go back thru every archaic law on the books and hold a vote to repeal them. On the backside, if the local constable wants to bring you in for a suspected crime, he can always say that he witnessed your monkey smoking...

Lomey Posted January 4, 2022 Posted January 4, 2022 On a side note Ken, Topeka is the capital of my great state of Kansas!

There are no Kangaroos in Austria just as there are no tigers in Kansas. A lot of tornadoes in Kansas. Please see “The Wizard of Oz” if you have further questions...
