Chas.Alpha Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 I always felt that Cohiba was a luxury brand, like Rolex. Does your Rolex tell time better than my cell phone?... 1

No, but 20 years later, my Rolex is worth more than double what I paid for it, while my flip phone from the same time period couldn't fetch 5 dollars on eBay. But you cant compare these items to cigars. A cigar is smoked for pleasure for a short period of time, and then it is gone. You taste it, and you either like the taste or you dont like the taste, and then it is gone. You can compare it to champaign, caviar, bourbon, or hell, you can compare it to an omelet, but you cant compare it to a watch or a phone. I love an omelet with smoked salmon and onions in it. Some people would hate that, but they love an omelet with cheese. Then there are people who hate all omelets. Some people love Budweiser. Some people love Cristal. Neither of those people are wrong. We like what we like. But nobody on earth would say that they taste the same, and clearly the people who prefer Cristal are willing to pay more for that taste than the people who like Budweiser are willing to pay for theirs. 13

Does your Rolex tell time better than my cell phone?... Devils advocate: The average lifespan of a phone is 3 years. Let’s say 500-800/pop plus data plans etc. There are Rolex watches from the 1960’s still keeping good time if maintained properly. In terms of a value play plus appreciation as is the case with @SigmundChurchill, one could make the argument. Point of the story is: No need to justify luxury. You do you. (I will be bummed if the flippers drive up the Cohiba market!) I have a phone, $20 timex and a relatively nice watch. I use all 3 interchangeably and without thinking. The nice watch will likely be the only thing surviving to gift to my son one day. 2
