JLP Petit Caballeros

Anyone have any experience with the Jose L. Piedra Petit Caballeros?

 

What did you think of them as a cheap and cheerful?

 

Not expecting them to be complex or great, but I do enjoy some of the other JLP's for decent smokes for the price

Great question. I think they are long filler and the same vitola as the punch EL 2017. I have not smoked them but would love to hear what people think.

Yeah, not sure about the filler.
They are the most expensive JLP's by a little bit, so guessing they are long filler but would have to check Habanos S.A.'s website

I had one over the weekend. They are short filler. A nice size, very pleasant for a 45 min smoke. Not complex but Cuban tobacco flavours. If you can find them between $2 and $3 each they are worth a go on a 12-pack. I haven't tried a side by side with a Quintero Favorito but they are also a tasty, simple, cigar. The Favoritos are now nearly twice the price of the Petit Caballeros in Spain though, for example. €1.90 vs €3.60.

Have had a lot of the Favoritos. Great smoke for the price

Yeah, i go there often also.
Habanos S.A doesn't have nearly as much info, but typically does list hand made or machine made and filler type

I've honestly never noticed any difference between the fillers after smoking ones with short, long and mixed

There is often a difference in how the ash behaves. A little less often there is a difference in how the cigar feels, that is, in a "squeeze test". The wrapper is often less refined in quality and application and there are more often visible lumps from the filler and binder showing through the wrapper. Sometimes, it's very hard to tell though. A quick look at the Flor de Cano Elegidos for example and anyone would think long-filler on those. In that case, the packaging would also affect impressions. The best I've ever seen for a short filler.

I agree though, a blind test between a short filler and long filler cigar of the same ring gauge and size would not be easy.

Cigar smokers with more refined palates than me will chime in I'm sure though.

Funny, as I'm smoking my first ever LFdC Elegidos right now.

Ash doesn't hold on as long and is flakeyer than long fillers but there's certainly no difference to me in taste,draw and burn

Draw is almost always looser on short filler, which I usually prefer.

Burn is quicker. Smoke time is shorter for same vitola.

Taste this is not universal and I notice a difference between the machine made cigarillos and the hand made short filler cigars. The cigarillos are closer to the Marca flavours but a little harsher but that could be just from burning hot.

The hand made larger short filler ones are almost always tobacco or relatively plain flavours like that. I have never had the more complex flavours you get from nearly every other Cuban cigar.

It would be hard to do a true blind test as you can often notice from the bunching at the foot and loose tobacco bits after cutting the cigar.

Of course it's also hard to say as there's no short filler version in most marcas.

I'll probably revisit Rafael Gonzalez Panatelas extra sooner or later as that would be the most promising one for me.

I will try to focus on comparing the short filler Elegidos with my long filler nc in about an hour and see what I notice
