Varadero becomes Covid Hotspot - Tourists Protest Hotel Isolation

While Corona infections and deaths continue to rise in Cuba ( latest daily record 21 deaths ) it seems as Varadero has become the hotspot with 150 Russian tourists locked in isolation in a Hotel and 48 Indian construction workers infected and transferred to a Havana hospital.

The Moscow ambassador to the island asks the Minister of Tourism to repeat the PCR tests and leave them in the hotels "until the circumstances are clarified."

The daily reports of the pandemic continue to add records in Cuba - 21 deaths this Monday, the highest number since the start of the health crisis, in March 2020 - and include a growing number of Russian tourists, who express their outrage on the networks social for being "prisoners" in their hotels in Varadero.

The country is experiencing a phase of community transmission of the disease, with 3,075 new cases this Monday, after the record of daily infections (3,519) was broken on Sunday for the third consecutive day.

The island has accumulated 207,322 sick people and 1,372 deaths so far. Of the total infections this Monday, diagnosed by processing 38,828 PCR tests, 2,999 correspond to autochthonous cases and 79 have the source of infection abroad.

Precisely in recent days, imported cases have risen. More than 150 Russian tourists who arrived in Varadero in the last week are isolated in their hotels after testing positive for COVID-19.

Russia's Consul General in Havana, Nana Mgeladze, explained to Sputnik that one of the flights that arrived on June 30 found 33 positive people, including crew members. In addition, another 130 nationals of that country who entered before June 29 remain in quarantine, including a man who presented health complications and was transferred to a hospital in Havana.

Many of the travelers have expressed their displeasure on social networks, claiming that they are vaccinated and have flown to the island with negative results of PCR tests they did the day before flying. "Imagine the degree of indignation of our tourists, they have been in a hurry. We do not explain why, the Cubans do not comment on those results. One could come to the conclusion that something is wrong in the laboratories," said Mgeladze .

On her Instagram account, the Russian Katerina Tyuleneva published a video in which more than a dozen tourists, including children, are seen being held in a hotel. The woman warns other potential travelers to "think it over a hundred times" before organizing a vacation on the island and she regrets the little support from consular officials in her country.

At least 48 Indian workers, who work in construction works in Varadero, were transferred last week to Havana to receive treatment after testing positive for the highly contagious Delta strain of covid-19. The workers are admitted to the Camilo Cienfuegos International Clinic on Línea and L streets, in El Vedado, a health worker revealed to 14ymedio.

"They were brought in a closed and air-conditioned bus from Varadero, so the driver ended up infected as well," laments the paramedic. "There is a lot of fear because it is known that the Delta variant is much more contagious than the previous ones and these men had been working on the Varadero works for days when they began to show symptoms."

A doctor from the clinic confirmed this information to this newspaper. "So far they are evolving well but we have had to redouble the protection measures because it is a variant with a great capacity to spread," explains the professional who preferred anonymity. "This place is in good condition and you can keep such a large group isolated."

Why would they travel during a pandemic? I have little sympathy for tourists right now. 

It's all fun and games until you get infected.

Seriously , this is craziness!  Russia is in a huge outbreak of Covid. and the Russian tourists are super spreaders .

To be fair, I'm not surprised they tested positive after getting the Russian vaccine...

There no other place in the world to vacation right now? A 13 hour flight? They know they'll get tested upon landing regardless. Cuban goofballs administering the tests. And I would imagine if anyone in your group tests positive the whole group gets locked down for some period. The regime is loving it--they're gouging the tourists for $200/night and keeping all the money!

How about just "don't come"? And I'm not sure what kind of help they're going to get from the consulate. It is what it is. The consulate can't force them to discharge anyone or fly them out of there.
