Popular Post LordAnubis Posted May 13, 2021 Popular Post Posted May 13, 2021 Eid Mubarak everyone. Today is the first Eid since my father passed away and so it’s gonna be a big family affair. Going to the cemetery in the morning after prayers and then all the uncles and aunties and cousins etc coming over pretty much the whole day. Should be fun and wish you all a blessed day whether you’re having Eid today, already celebrated yesterday or it’s just another day on the calendar for you 😁 Today I want to share with you some points on one of the pillars of Islam, Zakat (charity). Zakat is an obligation on all muslims. Basically, you are required to donate 2.5% of your excess wealth to charity. Some interesting points on zakat. Zakat should only be distributed to muslims with the only exception being causes for the conversion of non muslims to Islam are acceptable for receiving zakat funds. There’s debate within Islamic scholars, some say non muslims can receive zakat funds once the needs of all muslims have been met etc. As always, people have differing opinions. I heard an interesting point of view in a zakat workshop i attended this year. They said that don’t think of zakat as charity, but it is your obligation for your community. Essentially Allah has blessed us with our wealth and it is our obligation to distribute to the less fortunate. Zakat is mandatory on all muslims who have possessions above a threshold (Nisaab). The minimum threshold is pretty much 3 Troy ounces of gold. So if you have more than that, in terms of value, zakat is obligatory for you. Zakat is also payable on your business or farm land. There’s lots of rules for this which I don’t really look into but it’s stuff like “if you own one camel you have to donate one sheep” type stuff. And if you have a business you have to donate based on your stock on hand aswell Zakat is also due on things like mineral wealth. This was new to me, learnt that this year in the course I did. Sometimes you have to pay up to 10% of the value of the minerals! You have to pay your zakat once a year. Most muslims pay during Ramadan as it is the month of blessings. You can pay through the year or some people pay at the start of the new Muslim year. In any case. Hope some of this has been interesting to those who are unfamiliar with this aspect of Islam. Cigars wise no cigars for me today. Haven’t had a cigar through the month of Ramadan. Will have one over the weekend after the wife flys away 😁 Today I’m praying for my brothers and sisters in areas of conflict and hardship around the world. Peace and blessings to you all and I hope you have a wonderful day wherever you are. Mus 22 7
