Kaptain Karl Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 Since now we have a decent supply of HdM DC’s coming in, I’m curious to how long these should rest from the box date until they’re truly ready to go, and if recent (19/20) production doesn’t need the downtime as previous production did. 3
Popular Post mprach024 Posted May 7, 2021 Popular Post Posted May 7, 2021 I don’t believe in strict rules with cigars although there are some general guidelines. I’d try one as a benchmark ROTT, and then ignore for 6 months, try another. Wait 6 more months to try again. When they are absolutely delicious and overloaded with warm spice, cream, leather, and hints of toffee, smoke away. Buy another box, to have ready to start trying and repeating the process when box 1 is gone. You’ll know if it’s not ready. So far I’ve got a few boxes of 19s and 20s, I’ve tried 3 from my 19s and 2 from my 20s (one from each box). So far none of them are ready, but that doesn’t mean your box won’t be. 8
KavalanWhisky Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 I know what you mean about the current production being so great that cigars don't need aging but think that it just means they have a way better starting point and will be even better with age. I've been lucky to try some vintage Hoyo DC and new ones and for me the sweet spot is normally 5 years as its not too aged that it lacks flavour but also not too young its too sharp. Not tried a new DC recently though so can't comment but would do the same as above, ROTT, then leave 6-12 months then try again... 4
MPS Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 I have some great boxes from 2018 Upmann Factory and they are incredible right now. Took a little time to acclimate as they were pretty wet but once they aged a bit they really shined. Hoyo is a great cigar without too much age. These do feel like they have legs for days too. The GR’s are killers but will really benefit from a few more years. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 3
EMC12 Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 Hope this is within the rules: Anyone have thoughts or experience with UGO early ‘19 cabs? Buy blind or pass? 1

Popular Post Monterey Posted May 7, 2021 Popular Post Posted May 7, 2021 I recently broke into my 2015 cab. Really wonderful. The cream and spice are really ramped up. Silky smooth. Glad I let them sit. You will be rewarded if you sit on them for awhile. 6
Popular Post El Presidente Posted May 7, 2021 Popular Post Posted May 7, 2021 There is a richness post 2018 production that I haven't seen or picked up in years prior. It isn't a blend change as you can say the same for so many Cuban cigars in 19/20/21. Quality tobacco well executed. Traditionally I have been 5-8 on HDM DC. Loving 19 now with 18 months on them (92-4 consistently). The 18/19/20/21 have legs. They may not reach their peak (many will hit 96 + ) until 5 -8 and I suspect they will age exceptionally well well into a decade and beyond. If you were to give me a blind purchase of 2001 or 2018/19/20, I would take the latter. 10
havanaclub Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 I have some ROE FEB 17s out of a 25ct box smoking very well. Haven’t had one in probably 8-10 months will try one soon when the weather warms up. One of my favourite DCs. It might just edge out the Lusi for me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
joeypots Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 I'm dipping into my ROE DIC 16, HDM DCs. Truly ready to go? Because they are big cigars I'd say 90 days at the preferred RH. When will they be a their peak? That's subjective but at 4 .5 years the are delicious and are tough to fault. I think they have a bright future in front of them. 2
Çnote Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 My own experience. I had the pleasure of a late 90s example, perhaps the best cigar I've ever had. So, mark at least 1 box for 20 years...

BrightonCorgi Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 They're a good cigar at any stage. The longer you can hold off the better. Decade?

I always thought of HDM as a marca that was good without a long rest. But I can't think of a cigar that is just like it was 20 years ago. I got the Cuban bug smoking Hoyo DCs when a pal would bring them back from Montreal and Toronto. Those were good young and I didn't know anything about the acclimate, rest, age thing Most Cuban cigars, if not all, are different because of the changing tobacco strains. So I think I have to approach most cigars from the last few years as unknown quantities. 2

Don’t touch another for 6 months bro, check back then.

joeypots Posted May 11, 2021 Posted May 11, 2021 My experience has been that big cigars take longer to acclimate than little ones. Duh. 2

I know that's a lot to ask but from hard experience it's worth it. There's no regret greater than hitting the halfway point in a 50-cab and they finally come alive. 4 1

Funny how it's easy to force it and I've done that with a number of boxes so far. I'll let it rest 6 months or so before lighting one up! 1

This is why they used to refer to Cuban cigars as the dark side. Cigars need time? Buy a box that has some age on it. The aged cigars are so good you buy a box of quaffers to help keep you from smoking the aged smokes too fast. And so it goes.......
