Well this is good timing I have been looking at Electronic Humidors lately... a couple not on the list I have been short listing:

Swisscave

Cigarcava

Raching

But I do have a couple of things holding me back compared to a normal cabinet...

How long do these humidors last before they need repairs and how easy will the repairs be? The Cigarcava does say they offer replacement parts.

Also if you live in a country without massive temperature swings is it worth the extra complexity?

I will probably get one in the end even with these questions ?

I have one on the deck at work with minimal protection from the elements and it has been going 10 years. 

Personally, I would get the largest, cheapest unit possible.

only had it for 4 months but so far so good.. I had one issue with the cooling fan squeaking and brought it to the attention of the manufacturer . I thought they would send me another one and I would just replace as I'm not all that incompetent  . They ended up sending me another one !  So amazing customer by these guys.. I ended up giving the squeaky one to my neighbor who poured my concrete pad on the side of my house..

I'm in the UK and made the same decision last year. Warm spells in summers were causing temps to rise to high 20s°C with nowhere cool in the house, with regular fluctuations between 15°C and 28°C. Presumably your reasons for wanting one are similar?

I bought the Klarstein El Presidente 78... It surprised me how stable it is at holding humidity (using Boveda packs). It's a relatively low end unit and regards temperature, it works perfectly when ambient temp is around 20°C or higher. I have it set to maintain 18°C and when ambient is 18°C or lower, it doesn't appear to be sophisticated enough to stop cooling. This means it can occasionally drop to 14°C, which is no problem at 64-65% rh.

Yeah the same reasons - I am also in the UK.

My collection is starting to outgrow my two humidors and for now I have been using vacuum packing which is fine but I am starting to think about the effects of temp swings on longer term storage:

I buy much more at the moment than I smoke (for lots of reasons... you never know when buying internationally will become harder being one!) - so plenty of scope for ageing boxes in my personal collection. From what @Elpresidente replied it looks like these units can be quite resilient.

Out of the ones I listed it is a close run thing between the Raching and the Cigarcava I think... I have seen the Klarstein El Presidente 78 it looks really smart but a bit small for my needs.

I cant blame you. Being in insurance claims the image I had of alot of classic and exotic cars has changed or essentially been ruined. For the longest I wanted a 32 Duece Coupe and a handfull of other street rods and exotics. If I won half a billion dollar lotto today I don't think I would buy anything outside of current mass production midrange line.

For my BOTL Raching MON owning friends, have some questions:

• I decided to buy the raching MON3800A and was wondering if anyone has experience with this add-on they mentioned to remove ammonia....do you think it is worth it?

.... well, if your comments consist of moving your controlled humidor in and out of sunlight to support its functioning, then I would suggest those folks take another shot at a different trade, line sandbag stuffing.
