Question about Rafael Gonzalez Panetela

Hi everyone,

Recently, I have seen the Rafael Gonzalez Panetela being offered, but I always thought these were discontinued back in 2006 according to CCW? I thought maybe there was a typo somewhere, but yes, these are the Rafael Gonzalez Panetelas that measure 34RG x 4 5/8inches with 2017-2019 date codes, not to be confused with the Rafael Gonzalez Panetela Extras. Did HSA bring these back or is the info on CCW incorrect? Thanks!

First I'm hearing of Rafael Gonzalez Panetelas not Extra. I'm not a big fan of any short filler CCs, but I'm intrigued and I'll try to dig into it. Quite odd.

Awesome, looking forward to see what you can find. The RG Panetela Extras are shortfiller, but according to CCW, the Panetelas were longfiller, at least the ones discontinued on 2006 were, not sure what these current production ones are.

The Panetelas Extras are a Vegueritos vitola that was transitioned from a machine-made cigar of the Vegueritos Mano vitola in 2002. This was the case with many cigars in the major brands, however these remained short filler. A similar story with the Por Larranaga Panetelas. 

The Panetelas were a totally hand-made long-filler cigar offered alongside the Panetelas Extra from before the Revolution. They were a Panetelas vitola and fully discontinued in 2006, although I don't recall seeing them much for years before that.

Interesting! I've done a cursory search. Didn't find anything on google or bing. My best guess unless you've seen a box is that the vendor is mislabeling things. I've definitely seen that with cigar dimensions a lot.

Why do the machine made vitolas have the word mano (hand) in the name?

I'm seeing it at some vendors now. I assume they must have found old supply. I don't think it likely that 2017-2019 boxes have been floating around and no one mentioned anything on FOH yet.

Where did you get the 2017-2019 codes? From the vendor?

Edit: Last time I see them mentioned on FOH was around 2006, as in the carts and then in the list of 2006 discontinuations.

 

I was getting very curious about this, so I contacted both vendors about it. I haven't heard back from them yet. But the Rafael Gonzalez Panetelas (no extra) 34x117 are gone from both vendors websites it seems.
