Ken Gargett Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 i was under the impression that if a player with the ball - WR after a catch or RB on a run - takes the ball over the sideline, the clock is stopped. yesterday in the chiefs browns game, with approx 1.14 left in the first quarter, the runner took the ball over the sideline. he wasn't being tackled. and yet the clock continued to run. not adjusted. nothing said. what am i missing?
MooseAMuffin Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 It used to be the way you described it but they changed it a few years ago to speed the game up. It only stops when a runner goes out of bounds with 2 minutes left in the first half or 5 minutes left in the second half. 1 2

GotYaGoat Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 The clock does stop anytime a player runs out of bounds. But unless there’s two min or less in the 1st half or 5 min or less in the 2nd half - the clock will start to run again once the ref spots the ball.

Interesting. I don’t remember the play. But if the refs thought the runner’s forward progress was stopped before he went out of bounds then they could deem the player “down in bounds” ?♂️

TheGipper Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 CBS broadcast Stateside showed the clock definitely stopped at 1:15 until the ball was spotted, just at @GotYaGoat described. 1

NSXCIGAR Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 I noticed that too. Wasn't aware of the rule change but since no one pays attention to the clock that early no one ever brought it up. The bigger issue is the terribly punitive fumble out of the end zone rule. That needs to change to a 10 yard penalty from the spot of the fumble and loss of down--not a loss of possession. 1

The clip that was posted does show something odd on that play, the clock only stopped for about 5 seconds and then started again. I don't think they re-set the ball that fast. I've noticed oddities like this in games before too. Sometimes the clock doesn't stop at all. But apparently no one really cares until the end of the first half or the end of the game. 8 hours ago, NSXCIGAR said: I noticed that too. Agree that the offensive team shouldn't lose the possession (unless it was a 4th down play). I think ball should be placed at the 20, possession stays with the offense, and down should be counted. At a minimum, the offense should get a shot at a field goal if the play resulted in 4th down. However it changes, it definitely should be changed.
