Popular Post BTWheezy Posted February 22, 2021 Author Popular Post Posted February 22, 2021 Sunday update... I’ve been thinking about the design lines of the @NicPac Cab for weeks now. My original design was in the right direction, but the framework was too skinny for how beefy this thing is turning out to be, both visually, and likely structurally. The previous mortise and tenon direction has been scrapped, as I don’t have confidence that the joints will endure over time (the dimensions are too dainty), but also the legs aren’t visually thick enough. So the question was how to make the sides visually thicker without adding too much weight, and keeping the walnut panels as-built. After much thought, I finally landed on a solution: French cleats. Using 3/4” plywood strips, I could attach the panels securely with little added weight, and get the thicker profile I was after. 1. For those curious: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_cleat 1 and 2. Too dainty... 3. French cleats cut and ready. 4. . Securing a cleat to the case. 5. After mounting cleats in 3 rows on case and panels, just hang it in place with a lot of glue and some discrete finish nails. 6. Sides and back are secured, ready for trim work on the corners, which will cover the gaps and provide the visual appearance of legs. 7. Ran a 2” trim router bit along the top to give a smooth, even surface to mount the top when it’s time. 8. Close-up of front edge. Happy with the results. ??? Popular Post BTWheezy Posted March 13, 2021 Author Popular Post Posted March 13, 2021 @Fuzz - does this count as a necropost? 🧟♂️ Yes, it’s been a few weeks since the last post. Been dealing with some family priorities (all good...ish), work has been busy too, and there was a delay with @NicPac receiving the humidification devices (which impacts drawer placement, and by extension, where the cross-ventilation holes are drilled). Oh, and the biggest challenge/delay was me figuring out how I was going to construct the base. I thought I had a good plan originally, but with the “robustness” of this thing, I had to revise with a much sturdier solution. A quick catch-up since the last (necro)post... 1. Figured out the joint for the side posts of the cabinet. Originally, these were going to be load-bearing, but now, just cosmetic. 2. Close-up of the joint. Needed to be 3/4” stock on one side, and 1/2” on the other. The reasons why are mind-numbing, and my therapist says to accept it, adapt to it, and move on. 3. All the side posts. Very happy with the results so far, particularly the grain of the walnut. 4. My therapist. 12

Popular Post BTWheezy Posted March 14, 2021 Author Popular Post Posted March 14, 2021 A lot of progress today... 1. Because you know I’m all about that base, ‘bout that base, ‘bout that base, no dainty... 👍🏼 Used trimmed down 2x6 fir for a super-stout foundation. 2. Screws and washers to securely attach to cabinet. Didn’t use glue, just in case it needs to be removed down the road...which I can’t think of a reason why, but here we are. 3, 4, 5. Ventilation holes galore. No @rcarlson, I’m not getting sucked into your stupid suggestions to line the inside of the holes...dumb a$$. 6. Screwed the mobile base onto the humidor base. This will likely be the case until it’s delivered to @NicPac’s house. Very, very pleased with stability and mobility. 💪🏼 Have I mentioned this thing is heavy? 7. Trim pieces temporarily in place. Starting to look like something! 13

Popular Post BTWheezy Posted March 15, 2021 Author Popular Post Posted March 15, 2021 In spite of a fantastic Players Championship golf tournament, it was another satisfying day making sawdust. I realized that operating power tools while watching golf on the shop TV was a bad combo, so I took a proper break, then got back at it. Fortunately my boss is understanding, since he was at Bandon Dunes all weekend with his beautiful wife. Doors Day... 1. Ripped more walnut to specific width, so that it’s 4 even, symmetrical pieces across the front. Math was involved. 😡 2. Trimming pieces to consistent length. Yes, that’s a spinning table saw blade...probably should’ve stopped the saw for the pic, but mistakes have been made before. 3. Dry fit, and orientation of wood. Sides have been chamfered to 45 degrees like the rest of the cabinet. 4. Glue-up using biscuits. Also used makeshift cauls to ensure as flat a door as possible. Usually, cauls are pieces of stout wood that you clamp cross-panel to prevent bowing while the wood is under clamping pressure. But I had some 1/4” steel plate, and 50 lb. dumbbells on hand, and achieved the same result: flat panels. - Not pictured, but a lot of sanding of the cabinet. Grunt work, but must be done. - 5. Put pieces in place to get a feel for how it’s coming together. My math was correct. 🤟🏼 6. Therapy session, sponsored by Party Shorts and Richland Rum (thanks @rcarlson) And a short video I sent to Nick this evening... 15

Popular Post BTWheezy Posted March 19, 2021 Author Popular Post Posted March 19, 2021 Modest, but important, progress today...although I’m not sure that makes sense. Whatever.... You might remember from the last humidor build that I didn’t account for the hinge clearance before I made 6 (!!!) drawers, complete with ventilation slats. In other words, I kinda f-ed up. In turn, I had to completely rethink the hinges, which turned out really cool, but they were expensive as hell. Plus, time. So this time around, I’m doing a hinge mock-up, so I can confirm drawer clearance requirements *before* I spend 2 days making the drawers 1. The Blum hinges, in an onyx finish. Daddy like! 2. 35mm Forstner bit for hinge cups. 3 and 4. Hinges in place. 5. Scrap wood “door” at full open. This is the money shot: I now know that I need to accommodate 1 1/8” clearance for the drawer dimensions. 6. Nice clearance from the front. 7. Very nice! 11 1
Popular Post BTWheezy Posted March 20, 2021 Author Popular Post Posted March 20, 2021 Saturday, it’s March Madness, and the weather isn’t tempting me to play golf. A great day for sawdust... Today is Drawer Day, and I feel good about the preparation. As mentioned before, this is a lot of work and it need to be perfect...else it gets the hose. 😬 1. The starting point. 2. Organizing a little bit. 3. Kind of obsessed on measurements before cutting, but ‘‘twas worth it. Organizing the pieces by section. 4. After trimming pieces to length, I cut a rabbet on the sides for stronger assembly. 5. Coffee break, sponsored by Girl Scouts of America 6. First step of drawers is complete. Tried something a little different today...a time lapse of drawer construction. Let me know if you like this, or prefer still pics. 9
Chibearsv Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 I have a hard time conceptualizing how you do any of this let alone at high speed. 😁 1

Popular Post BTWheezy Posted March 21, 2021 Author Popular Post Posted March 21, 2021 More progress on the main drawers. 👍🏼 My back is requesting a cigar and a bourbon. Request granted. 🥃 6
Popular Post BTWheezy Posted March 21, 2021 Author Popular Post Posted March 21, 2021 Sunday update...this is light on pictures, but strong on progress...mostly because it was a day of menial tasks...drawer assembly, and a sh!t-ton of sanding. If you watched the last time lapse video, you might’ve noticed that I bailed on the slats for the upper drawers, mainly because I hadn’t figured out the spacing of the slats. So I unplugged, watched basketball, and came up with the jig for easy, repeatable spacing. 1. Upper drawer slats, and the little jigs for spacing. Glue, then snug up against the jig, some micro-brads, rinse and repeat. 2. Upper drawer done. 3. All drawers complete, sanded and wiped down. Ready for install once I get there. 😤 9

Popular Post BTWheezy Posted April 10, 2021 Author Popular Post Posted April 10, 2021 Been a minute since the last update. Usual excuses of busy at work, family time, Easter weekend, playing a little golf when I can. Mrs. Wheezy and I did get fully vaccinated in the meantime, which is nice. Also it’s crappy weather this weekend and The Maters is on. Nice! Here’s the latest... 1. Testing door installation with scrap plywood. 2. Upper drawers installed. 3. Fright side lower drawers installed. 4. Close-up of spacer blocks on top drawer to increase airflow. Wish I had done this on my humidor, but c’est la vie... 5. All drawers are systems go! Very pleased with accuracy and soft-close action. Daddy like! 6. Doors installed. 7. Coming together. 8. Public Service Announcement, courtesy of @rcarlson and @ElJavi76 11 4
