Merry Christmas with Peter James ....

My sister-in-law knows I like cigars; so she reached out to me for advice -- her "team" -- that works at one of the "Big Pharma's" (yes, its one of the companies that recently got approval for the COVID vaccine) wanted to buy a Christmas present for their boss.  Apparently, he is new to cigars and on occasion - pre-COVID - frequented a local cigar bar with his mates.  Thanks to all the BOTL here at FOH, I talked her into what I thought would be a first class Christmas gift for any fellow cigar smoker.  I even contributed some of my personal cigar collection to complete the ensamble!

The case arrived from Peter James in less than 1 week.  We stocked it, threw in a 69 RH Boveda and lightly shrink wrapped it being careful not to compress the cigars or remove all the air.  Should be there in time for Christmas.

I made clear to the wife that she could do the same for me anytime!  I would also be willing to advise any of your spouses / significant others on the perfect gift for you ....

Nice job here George! I'm sure he'll love it.  This case is on a Christmas list for me as well.. Doubt I'll see one anytime soon though ?

Yes, it's more than I keep my humidor at - I prefer 63% RH for the CC's.  But, it's one of the small ones that they use when shipping cigars and I didn't have a 62.

You might already be aware but I wasn't to start with...

If you check out the Boveda website they reveal that % Boveda does not equal % maintained in your humidor/case/whatever. 

I forget the actual figures but for example; with 69% you get more like 62% and if you like 65% you should put a 72%. Something like that anyway.

Doesn’t harm, short term anyway, and higher rH is preferable for shipping.

Yup, AGREED - when I told my wife I wanted one of these - you can guess what she said ...  I certainly don't qualify as the "boss" at home -  It didn't help that a box of CC's that I ordered had just arrived the day before.  

My sister in-law had something like 12 people go in on the gift for the "boss" - so, it wasn't too bad per person cost.  When I first suggested this idea she started looking at other "cheaper" cases and then I showed her some of the posts here and how "Real Cigar Aficionado's" wanted the Peter James case.  After she sent around pictures to her team-mates they all approved and then asked me to quickly buy some good cigars to fill the case.  As we all know here; nothing quick about good cigars.

It's always a lot of fun spending other people's money!

Thanks for the confirmation!  One of the best part's of FOH is the banter / debates that go on in the various threads.  Lot's of opinion's and as importantly lot's of very useful information.  Personally, I had never heard of PJ's before becoming a member of this site.  Now I too "need" one -- or maybe I "need" another great box of CC's and just keep using my plastic cigar caddy - who knows .... maybe the wife will come through ....

If you had a perfect sealed system, then of course you would get the stated RH, +/- the tolerance. 

In a leaky system like a cigar case or desktop there's always some air exchange. 

I see it myself empirically. I put a 69% in my desktop and get 60-62% on average at about 18-22°C. 

I'll have a look for the info again. It may have disappeared since they updated the website, but it'll be archived somewhere.

You sure? I think what boveda means by that is a lot of humidor don't seal up perfect and humidity is a function of temperature. So if you put a 62% pack in a leaky glass top humidor with the air temperature of 40F its not going to perform very well. I have a 62% in a Tupperware that sits around 69F and it always reads 62%.

I'm not sure no, but I assumed it was due to leaky humidors/cases (see my second post). I could swear I saw it somewhere, but can't seem to find it anywhere now.

Re Bovida. They are not true aqueous salts, and therefore don’t behave exactly as salts do. They are subject to the laws of hygroscopic substances, presumably to a lesser degree. This means that they are at least somewhat temperature dependent. Many salt tests are centered around a 20C sample. Without it being published I would assume their performance based around that temperature.

Speculation on my account... but logical. If not a pure salt. True salt performance not guaranteed.
