Question for seasoned smokers

Based on your knowledge of cigars, if you were going to stock a humidor with cigars for long term aging (5+years) what would you  stock it with?

esplendidos and lanceros. 

siglo 3's, 5's, and 6's (I guess 1, 2, and 4 as well, but I prefer 3, 5, 6). 

of course the robusto. 

I think the medio siglo is EXTREMELY overrated (maybe the most overrated cuban cigar at the moment), but your tastes may differ.

That's sorta what I'm looking for. Realistic and accessible.

What I've learned (and I'm far from experienced) that a 10+ old simple standard cigar smokes better than the expensive cigars of today. 

The best cigar I smoked this year was a '06 RASS. It was better than the behike 52 I smoked in September.

Heard from several people that the RASS ages extremely well. Guess I  gotta get me some now that you've talked me into it.?

Mix vitolas. You’re not always going to have 60-90 min to smoke. I’ve heard that Cohibas might age well. Find something you enjoy smoking now, and age them; they’ll def be better with time.

I like them all lol. If i had to choose, I would go with Siglo 6, Piramides (Robusto) and a smaller vitola maybe Sig 2.  Lusitanias are also great, I was about to edit my first post when I saw that table.

If you’re new to cigars, I would avoid expensive boxes, (Lusitania, Sir Winston, Esplendido) that may be impacted by improper temp and RH controls that you are sorting out as you get going. Also, many of the vitolas noted in the chart above are hard, if not impossible, to find, (Partagas 898, Trinidad Fundadores, Punch Double Corona). 

IMHO, the following are the “best” mid-range priced cigars to set aside for aging that really shine after 5 years. None of them are monster ring gauge, Churchill’s, or Double Coronas. They are all packed with flavor and can be smoked in a modest amount of time. 

1. Por Laranaga Petit Coronas 

2. H Upmann Connoisseur No. 1 

3. Juan Lopez Selection No. 1

4. Bolivar Petit Coronas

5. Montecristo Number 4

6. H Upmann Mag 46 

7. Punch Punch 

8. Partagas Shorts in a 50 cab 

If you want some larger cigars to add to the mix, here are some that also do great with age, but won’t break the bank. 

1. Montecristo No. 2

2. Romeo Y Julieta Churchill 

3. Bolivar Belicosos Finos 

Lots of good thoughts in the thread above, but this is just what I know now, that I wish I knew a long time ago. It took me a while to get all this sorted out. I wish I would have stayed away from Limited Editions, Regional Editions, and expensive boxes at first. They take up a lot of space, don’t end up getting smoked, and if not stored in ideal conditions, aren’t all that great. 

Most of all, enjoy the journey.

Don’t waste money on Behikes IMO.  Some boxes of Trinidad Coloniales, Uppman Connoisseur No 1 or Cohiba Siglo II that you can smoke now and age to get better makes me happy.

  I'm not sure if it applies to you but I'd consider the possibility that you might not like aged cigars. They can change significantly, certainly in terms of smoking style before you get to the flavours.

  If you enjoy the rambunctious fresh style of PLPC etc then you might very disappointed opening up a box you've been sat on for 5+ years. They loose that 'in your face' vigour you might be so fond of. 

  You might be better off simply buying little and more often so your stock is 1-2 years old depending on how you enjoy certain cigars. Ageing doesn't necessarily make a cigar better, beyond the first year or so it just changes them
