French Advertising Poster (41" X 59") Marius "O'Galop" Rossillon Artwork. The Michelin Man, known by his name Bibendum in France, was created in 1898 by French artist Marius Rossillon (better known by his pseudonym O'Galop). The Michelin Man's design was based on the European icon of beer and brewing, Gambrinus, and a stack of tires seen one day by Michelin co-founder Edouard Michelin. O'Galop designed posters featuring Bibendum throughout the first decade of the 20th century, and offered here for the first time at Heritage is a poster featuring the popular mascot delivering a swift kick to onlookers. Translated to English, the text reads "the kick of the Michelin sole," emphasizing the durability and traction of Michelin's tires. 2
