DeeBeezy Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 I sampled my first one this week as part of the weekend competition, interested to hear what people who have more experience than me with this cigar think. What is the flavour profile? what wrapper colour suits them best? I have an opportunity to buy a 2007 box, how do they age? 1
maverickdrinker Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 Take a look at some of the recent reviews from this week. Overall, EDRM with age are fantastic. Worth purchasing an 07 box if the price is right Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 3
cfc1016 Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 To me, I find that they give me a wonderful reminder of the la gloria flavor profile of old. Harkens memories of LGCs I enjoyed in the 90s. It's not a perfect recreation, but it inspires recollections of the mdo2s and tainos of late 80s/early 90s production, that I was fortunate enough to smoke, in what feels at this point like a past life. 3

If you go off the flavours, listed over 19 reviews on Cuban Cigar Website, for this cigar you'd find that it varies... Almond (7), Citrus (6), Shortbread (4), Honey (4), Cream (3), Nut (3), Floral (2), Milk Chocolate (2), Nutmeg (1), Fruit (1), Tobacco (1), Pepper (1), Cinnamon (1). In general what you need to know is that El Rey del Mundo is a mild cigar. It was once the premium Habanos cigar of its day in the 1940s and 50s (prior to the Cuban Revolution), like Cohiba is today, but it fell out of favour from the 1990s onwards with changes in cigar trends to more stronger Habanos cigars. For me, it's mainly a mild almond nut, shortbread and citrus flavour profile which can include elements of fruit, creaminess, leather and Earthiness. 53 minutes ago, dan benhamou said: what wrapper colour suits them best? In April 2019 there was a 24:24 listing for light-wrappered and dark-wrappered El Rey Del Mundo Choix Supremes. The greater majority of members chose the darker-wrappered ones, but not by much. I chose the lighter-wrappered ones. I honestly feel that there isn't an objective answer to this question, it's a matter of personal preference. 56 minutes ago, dan benhamou said: I have an opportunity to buy a 2007 box, how do they age? This is where they can develop floral notes and a deeper creamy texture, or even leather. If I had an opportunity to get a 2007 box I would. 4

In regards to the choice of wrapper, how does the profile differ with respect to different shades, what flavours would that dark wrappers impart that the light ones Wouldn’t and vice versa in your experience? with regard to the 2007 response am I correct in saying that it is then predominantly floral given that was the flavour stated first?
Puros Y Vino Posted July 29, 2020 Posted July 29, 2020 Great cigar. They definitely have a lot of what JohnS notes. I find it has a flavour note of toasted marshmallow, which I love. 1

I'm not the best person to ask about this because I tend to favour lighter wrappers on cigars. Although I have smoked a fair share of darker-wrappered cigars over the years (for example, San Cristobal de la Habana El Principe, Montecristo No.2, Partagas Serie D No.4 et al.), I haven't smoked enough darker-wrappered El Rey del Mundo Choix Supremes to provide the definitive answer you are looking for. Of the few darker-wrappered ErdM Choix Supremes I had I would say they had some of those milk chocolate, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper and tobacco notes listed above, in varying degrees. Now in regards to lighter-wrappered ERdM Choix Supremes, yes I very much appreciate the almond but, shortbread and citrus/fruity notes you can get from them. 1 hour ago, dan benhamou said: with regard to the 2007 response am I correct in saying that it is then predominantly floral given that was the flavour stated first? Not necessarily. It can develop floral notes. Alternatively, you may get leather and/or creaminess. One thing I know, you'll lose the edges and they will be very mild and likely refined flavours at that age. 1

Seems lighter cigars have that quality. There's lots of subtle things going on with ERDM. I think honey sweetness and graham cracker, a little woodiness, and the floral notes. I'll have to look for the marshmallow next time. I get a lot of marshmallow in La Fuerza lately. I'm not a big ERDM smoker. 1
havanaclub Posted July 29, 2020 Posted July 29, 2020 Great cigar imo and very underrated. Give it a second band or a new one and add a very fat short torp and boom! They would sell out at 827pm EST. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2
boopdeep Posted July 29, 2020 Posted July 29, 2020 For whatever this is worth (small sample size and anecdotal) - but I ordered a sampler of 10 of these in the early 2010s. They were fresh at the time. Smoked 3-4 of them over the next year and hated them. I actually wrote off the ERDM brand. I Stumbled across them in my humidor about a year or less ago, and gave one a whirl. Absolutely fantastic. Floral and citrus. Smoked another a month later, and same thing. In my position, and as a result of my experience, I would absolutely buy an aged box. 1

While I love Hermosos No. 4, ERDM is ripe for a Genios, Dobles or a Rodolfos in the lineup. Please--no Montesco or Sublimes. Of course a long Panetelas to replace the GdE would be ideal. Laguito Especial if not just bringing the GdE in Deliciados back. Bringing the GdE back would be the easiest money HSA's ever made. Even though I'm not a big ERDM fan, I would love to see the brand regain its greatness. It was in the early 20th century the most famous and respected Cuban marca. 3

I've smoked 08 and 09 boxes and have a 2014 on the go. They are one of the most age-worthy cigars out there. I didn't get floral, I got really generous, mouth-filling, velvety smoke with sweet, biscuity cream, and just beautiful aged tobacco flavours. I wish I had more. Go for it. 1
dshot Posted July 29, 2020 Posted July 29, 2020 I have a box from 18' that has been amazing. One of the best smokes I had this and last year. Great construction, beautiful flavors of nutty/cream. I'd say if you can find them for a decent price I'd pull the trigger. 1
SCgarman Posted July 29, 2020 Posted July 29, 2020 Wow! All you folks that think the CS is a great cigar, I have a half a box of 2010 I would LOVE to get rid of and trade for something else. They are perhaps the worst dog rockets for Cuban cigars ever in my experience. Absolutely NO flavor, like smoking rolled up hay. I have double, triple, quadruple puffed on these just to taste some sort of semblance of flavor. By far the worst $176 ever wasted on a box of cigars from any country. I will never buy a box of these ever again in this life. Go ahead, flame on!! 1
rascalmonkey Posted July 30, 2020 Posted July 30, 2020 one of the first boxes I bought was a 50 cab of ERDM Choix's - ca. 2004 they were so strong! you had to smoke em from a foot or two away 1
Monarch Posted July 30, 2020 Posted July 30, 2020 used to be my go to cigar, really enjoy them and almond is the dominant flavor profile. Had both light and dark color wrappers, I generally prefer light color wrapper, but for these ones darker is better since they are a light flavored cigars. 1
cottierm Posted July 30, 2020 Posted July 30, 2020 I'm finishing a 2009 box of these (light wrappers; OBU MAY 09) at the moment. They were very good from the time I received them and are fantastic right now. 2
BrightonCorgi Posted July 30, 2020 Posted July 30, 2020 This is not generally considered a dark wrapper cigar, where the ERDM Gran Corona is more common with dark wrapper. The CS is a great cigar and reminds me to pick up some boxes, thank you! Been several years since I bought one. One of the few remaining that are still like they "use to be" more or less. 2
Kierkegaard Posted July 30, 2020 Posted July 30, 2020 When good, when bought from Cuba or from our host they are one of my favourite cigars, really fruity, citrusy, nutty, floral and almondy. Just wonderful. The Demi Tasse are also more of the same, but more intense and with an extra perfume aroma and coffee flavour. One of my favourite marcas. In my experience they are much fruitier when you go for a lighter, rosado wrapper then when you go witha darker one. The darker wrapper seems to be harsher in my opinion and less fruity... But one should take that with a grain of salt, your mileage may vary.Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk 1
