I used to find it quite harsh for the final third but now I just slow down and adjust my draw and I can keep it from getting harsh or burning my fingers even if I nub the cigar.

I usually puff cigars until cigar band/nub point. I actually puffed Leyenda to the shortest inch and ended up my fingers got burned ?

Usually I nub most cigars - but if I am not enjoying it/feeling too tired I would end the cigar where it is at. No point in pushing through to finish the smoke. Remember, it's an activity of relaxation...not a chore.

i just started messing with this purging method i saw on cigars daily, you light the end and purge, the end will light on fire and you just keep purging until the flame dies down. it seems to get rid of a lot of the bitterness for me and becomes nice and smooth again so i can smoke it down to the nub. it only seems to work on younger or fuller cigars, any lighter cigars with over 5 years on it doesn't seem to need it.

For me, it’s more temperature based than taste. As someone who likes to note (even negative flavors) in the last third, I usually quit once it’s too hot for comfort.

I’ll nub the cigar if it continues to give and give. Even with a little bitterness past the band, I’ll go slowly, purge the cigar once or twice, let it sit for as long as it can without losing it’s  burn, and then puff really slowly to try to squeeze out the remaining flavor while not overheating the cigar.

On the flip side, I won’t hesitate nowadays to quit a cigar if it doesn’t get better in the middle third. Especially if it tastes bad. if that happens and I still have time, I’ll eat a little fruit to cleanse the palate and then pull out a small cigar. Can’t end on a negative note!

When it gets tasteless or acrid I’ll pitch it. Which is usually somewhere towards the very end in my case (slow and steady wins the race). But I won’t hesitate to pitch one I’m not enjoying, even if it’s only halfway through. No point in trying to soldier on when the flavors aren’t there.
