I'm curious as to how many cigars is too much?

I smoke 2-3 cigars/week;

I don't consider myself a collector (officially) even though I have quite a few boxes of collectible cigars;

I buy to enjoy, and give away, never to resell.

If I NEVER buy any more cigars I have enough to last me through 2030.

So, how much is too much?

I smoke 2 cigars a day mostly. sometimes less, sometimes more (especially during events). So, I'd say it depends on how you feel with that. I mean physically.

Know your health, and family risk/history. It is a personal decision. From a collecting perspective, if I had the space, I would have a walk-in humidor filled in my home. I smoke 2-4 cigars a week sometimes less and sometimes a lot more. I have collectables that I could sell but wont. I guess that makes me an enthusiast and a hobbiest of sorts.

Not sure there is such a thing as ‘too much’, as I very much agree that it’s a personal decision. How much is too much will depend totally on how you and those close to you feel is too much.

For me personally, the amount of cigars I smoke greatly varies. I could have a week where I only have one or two. But sometimes it’ll be 2 or more cigars a day. Neither of which I consider too few or too many.

In warmer months I smoke 10-12 a week. I do sometimes wonder if it's too much from a health perspective.

In terms of collecting, you could never have too much considering how well CCs hold (& increase in) value...meaning you could off-load some anytime you needed. As with wine I like to see how things age, so buying boxes from every vintage is paramount. I've zeroed in on what I really like, so I'm not will-nilly buying random boxes anymore. I buy with intent.

I have about 900 cigars with an average age of 3-5 years on them. I only smoke 1-2 per week and I’m worried about aging them to death! I have the opposite problem compared to many folks on here. I’ve overbought!

Genetics and family history my friends.  We all know it’s not healthy but know those two things while assessing the risk.  That should drive your decision.

Personally I’m at about 4-5 a week.

It is up to each individual, if you are worrying about it then it’s probably too much.

It's like asking the meaning of life...  There is no definitive amount.

In today's climate one cigar is too many.  Cigar smoke is a known carcinogen.

Three on weekends and one during the week.
I try to take breaks to keep the tasters fresh.

Whatever risk vs reward ratio suits the user. Happy Smoke rings!

Too many is when you have more cigars than you'll smoke before the cigars pass their prime. If your current collection can be expected to peak in 5 - 8 years and then decline, but your current rate of consumption means you have enough stock for 10+ years, then you have too many. At that point they're not aging, they're going to waste.

I sold off a ton of 98-03 over winter so now on buying spree again. What do you think about our new football coach Pittman? I think basketball headed in right direction. Baseball team would have been very good. Dayton Moore's son looks awesome. I'm in Kansas City.

Interesting point. You do need to know your cigars. I am smoking H Upmann lE and 50 Mag from 2009,2010 and they are smoking beautifully right now. Bolivar RC from 2003 have lost very little.

Had thus discussion last night w a buddy. He smoke 3-4 a week and has 175 sticks.  I told him he needed 3-6 more boxes for rotation then a box every now and then.

I have 1k. Smoking one a day in warm weather. Less in the winter. With that said I am still collecting while the tobacco is really good. With a new special period starting I am concerned that quality may slip. Worst case for us is lifting the embargo though. Will be hard to find good Cubans for a few years after that at a decent price.
but I’m a hoarder and I like variation in what I burn.
if course now ship times are longer so patience and planning are key

Any advice on the "average" lifespan of cigars? I know this may also be down to personal tastes and preferences, and also probably down to individual stick characteristics, but it would be nice to have a ballpark estimate.

I see many members on here smoking early 00's/90s cigars, and generally give good reviews. This leads me to think that cigars can comfortably age well for at least 30 years without declining significantly (correct storage conditions by assumption).

On the other hand, comments say pre-embargo cigars may be hit-and-miss. This then leads me to think that cigars may start decline after 40+ years.

Is my generalisation somewhat accurate?

From my personal experience, I had a box of HdM Grand Epicures from back when they were released (2013). I had one in 2017 and it was smoking absolutely beautifully. I had another in 2018 and it was also a great smoke, but some tasting notes changed from the 2017 experience. I haven't touched another stick since, because I am trying to save it for a "special" occasion. On the other hand, I am worried that it will go past its peak if I wait too long.

Sounds like they might have expired, happy to dispose of them for you ;)
