gojira Posted June 30, 2020 Posted June 30, 2020 Does anyone know of a website (such as Cubancigarwebsite) that catalogues Cuban pre-emargo cigars? I'm especially looking for some info on the Por Larranaga Royales. Any help would be appreciated.
cigcars Posted June 30, 2020 Posted June 30, 2020 *If you want access to the actual pre-Embargo cigars of the period then go to www.gothamcigarmuseum.com and you will find both pre-Embargo and Clear Havana cigars that can be bought at much more reasonable prices than are offered on some cigar sales sites. Of course, this was some years ago and to the best of my knowledge they should still be accessible. Good luck with that! 1

When they started producing these, if there were other boxes produced on the top of the 25 count one, stuff like that. Just curious about what I will be lighting up, lol. I really don't know much about pre-emargo cigars and this will be the first that I'll smoke. 1

It's obviously not a dead cert, but it would seem to suggest that the creation and naming of that vitola came in 40's to 50's.

NSXCIGAR Posted June 30, 2020 Posted June 30, 2020 Pre-Revolution CCs are a specialty unto themselves. There were hundreds of marcas, very little catalogued, many thousands of models and vitolas. There are only a handful of experts on the subject in the world. One might be able to find info on a particular marcas or cigar but it will be limited. No one ever thought to catalogue anything back then. It would be like cataloguing modern wines without computers. Why and how? Resources like the Gotham Museum are really just collections. Some very limited info on particular cigars might be available but that's about it. Outside of some of the general indicators like warranty seal age it's usually very difficult to obtain info on any particular cigar.

The Gotham site has been shut down for a few years and it looked like the last time Nick was active on social media with the “Gotham” username was also several years ago. He had one of the better collections online. Some very cool stuff. The more time that goes by the more I realize how little concentrated info there is on Pre-Rev Havana cigars. The US didn't care--90% of all CCs smoked were clear Havanas. The cultural and historical richness of Havanas seems not to have been preserved outside of a few individuals who were highly involved in Havana importing in Europe prior to 1960. It's a shame how much of this rich history was lost due to the Revolution.
