The best of the new Trinidads?

Recommended Posts

Used to be until a few years ago. Siglo VI has absolutely skyrocketed in price recently. The price in Cuba had not risen concomitantly however making me believe this is a distributor/vendor markup and not a HSA markup. Siglo VI has huge demand and perpetually low supply unlike most other Cohiba. CoRo production to Siglo VI production is probably 100:1.
Yes, there is a premium put on Siglo VI but it is considered a special cigar. It's 13% larger by weight than the CoRo but ~44% more expensive in Cuba. Outside of Cuba the Siglo VI is 100% more expensive than CoRo, so something's going on specifically with this cigar.

Yes the media Luna on Monday here were 185 in the carts. Not too bad, but the week prior or so they were 169 on 24, Cheapest I have seen.

There's quite a bit to a question such as this but here's my take on it after ruminating on it for awhile. So here goes in point form... The Trinidad La Trova LCDH was released in 2017. Notice

I know the Media Luna has been classified as a petit robusto, but to me, it smokes more like a robusto than a petit robusto.  The size is not that much smaller.  I love the Vigia, but they do smoke a

Well, to be clear, the CoRo is not "19.8% larger".  Media Luna is the same diameter, and only a tiny, 9mm shorter, so as far as size goes the CoRo is less than 10% larger.  If you are saying that the

If a tree falls in a forest, and no one is around to hear it... Does SigmundChurchill still smoke a Siglo VI?
I'm buying you a scale bro. I want you to weigh every cigar before you smoke it.
This is a funny thread to me cause what Elliot said is ultimately what drives the bus. Do you love cigar x? Is cigar x overpriced? Do you gaf if it's overpriced or are you gonna shut up and smoke it? Maybe a bit simplistic, but just my thoughts.
I like dressing well... Love the Made in Italy tags. Hate having to pay full retail for anything. However, on occasion certain retailers/designers I buy only make limited edition pieces. They'll never be on sale or if they make it to discount events my sizes are gone. So, how bad do you want it? Bad enough to pay full retail? Same with cigars, they might not be "worth it", but the market says they're trending at a certain price point.
My new Trini order mirrors that of Elliot. I'm waiting on 2 boxes of MLs from our host. I can't wait to rip into em.

I have to agree with you on that one Javi. If you like the cigar and don’t mind paying for it, so be it.
I would also agree, I do enjoy some of the finer things in life, but I will shop around a little to find the best price, but I don’t obsess over it.
You can see the demand for new stuff, like the Repackaged QD, like the maddy 1,2,3 when the mad 1, years ago alone wouldn’t sell out, and now the new trinny. Demand goes up, supply obviously down with less shipments coming in as Prez said, so prices move accordingly.

 • 1 year later...

A bump…for any new opinions, and/or perhaps change of opinions over a year later.

For example, if the Vigia was also included, does that change anyone’s opinion??

Gonna take some time to acquire these and formulate my own opinion, so just trying to ‘narrow the focus’ a bit further ;)

If only we were all still talking about sub-$200 Trinis.

I came back to cigar world at the wrong f’ing time 🙃

Vigia is as good as any of the 3 new vitolas & at a much better price. I can still source boxes for $200 and I think they are worth every penny. I'm not paying the premium for any of the new sticks, seems like another Habanos cash grab. Just my .02

My last Vigia blind purchase shipped as MAR ENE 20 (Laguito for the long haul!!), plus a TLE 19 code that's already smoking lights out.

I think the ML has become the forum favorite. All are good and I actually prefer the Topes flavor profile to the Esmeralda.

Vigia seems to have been doghoused since these new Trinis came onto the scene. Haven't had one in years.

Coloniales have been quite good lately as well.

Here's my opinion. Trinidads are pretty much all good cigars they use extremely good tobacco it's apparent. I'd recommend you buy for the time you think you have allotted for cigar smoking. Try that. I personally like Vigia for times when I don't have 1 hour plus. When I do have more time I reach for something longer/wider like the Esmeralda or if I have it a Fundadores.  Dog walking/Morning smoke with coffee I'll get a reyes. La Trova there good but hard to find and at such a high markup it's not even worth it anymore to chase those IMO the value to satisfaction ratio for me is way way off. Get different vitolas for your collection based on different time to finish allotments. Personally, a lot of my cigar buying is based on time I have to smoke to tell you the truth not trying to go down this rabbit hole of what is the best in the marca. I really stick to standard production and try to have a variety for different times to smoke. I've find that works the best for me personally since I have a ton going on daily typically. If you have all the time in the world I'd be solely smoking double coronas/Laguito Especials daily. That's the goal when I'm older!

Based on the cigars listed, Esmeraldas stand out for me.  Along with Esmeraldas, my favorite Trinidads are Reyes and Coloniales.  I wanted to like the Fundadores but they just don't pop that much for me.  They're good but I think Reyes is a much tastier smoke.

Agree on Reyes. I loaded up when they could be had easily sub 200.00.

Has anyone ever tried smoking all 3 of these against the Vigia at the same time?

Sounds ridiculous, but hearing people say "'X' is the best!!" is sometimes silly...meaning the blend is probably the same for all 4 vitolas...it basically comes down to what size you like & if you're willing to pay pay the premium for 'new' sizes.

Additionally, maybe its just me but I feel like La Trova & Fundadores have lost all their backbone. They both seem soooooo mild these days.

I couldn't agree more here.

This would be the equivalent of saying, ‘why smoke different Cohiba Siglos, the blend is probably the same, so it’s just a matter of how much time & money you want to spend’. Extreme perhaps as there are bigger variations in sizes in the Siglo line than what is being discussed here, but the point is the same…size matters (wrapper/filler ratios, length, RG etc.), or so they say ;).

Why make our beds in the morning if we’re just gonna mess em’ up again that night?! ;)

La Trova and Esmeralda have put up the highest scores and wow moments for me, but if I averaged out all the factors/numbers I would say Vigia takes it on consistency, decently high scores, price.

I think trova stands apart as different and the rest share very similar dna

I would agree, and not in a good way. The few La Trovas I've had were shockingly light. Silky smooth to be sure, but I would not call them rich in flavor. It's the Mag 50 of the Trini lineup. I don't think you could peg it as a Trini only because it's not flavorful enough to give you any hints. I miss the Robustos Extra...

I'd argue the Siglo line varies much more in size than the Trinis do (3 of Trinis are robusto/Petite robusto), so maybe not apples to oranges.  But here's sizing just for fun:

Siglo:

 • I: 4 x 40
 • II: 5.2 x 48
 • III: 6.2 x 42
 • IV: 5.4 x 46
 • V: 6.4 x 43
 • VI: 5.9 x 52

Trini:

 • Vigia 4.4 x 54
 • Media Luna: 4.5 x 50
 • Esmeralda: 5.8 x 53
 • Topes: 4.9 x 56

The Esmeralda, Topes (2019) and Media Luna are better-than-standard regular production releases because I hypothesise that Habanos S.A. is heavily marketing the 50th anniversary of the Trinidad brand. They are doing this for two reasons; one, the Trinidad family are still contesting the origin of the brand which they date back in their family to 1905 and produced cigars until 1959 before leaving Cuba. Secondly, the evidence that Trinidad was born in 1969 is minimal at best. The main source for this was Adriano Martinez Rius, the former consultant to the Cuban Tobacco Industry through Cubatabaco & Habanos SA. He was also the honorary consultant for Min Ron Nee's classic "An Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Post-Revolutionary Havana Cigars". Personally, I highly rate Mr Martinez Rius' contributions to the historical knowledge of our shared enthusiasm for our hobby (his 2010 book, "The Great Book of The Habanos" remains one of my most-referenced and favourite sources of information on Habanos cigars) so for me, it's quite likely that Trinidad was cited or mentioned at the higher levels of Cubatabaco in 1969. However, evidence for diplomatically-gifted cigars prior to 1992 is elusive. Therefore, because the dispute of the origin of the Trinidad marca is on-going for the reasons stated above, the Esmeralda, Topes (2019) and Media Luna has been beneficiary to better quality production and better marketing.

Fascinating.

I love the La Trova and Topes. The Topes just sung to me and it was a near perfect smoke - cream, coffee, chocolate and bread is what I got.

I've tried two Esmerelda's and they have been near tasteless. I'm starting to think I got a dud box or maybe just trying them too young so have thrown them towards the back of the humidor and praying they blossom.

Would take the Topes above everything else I've smoked in the Trinidad line (why can't they come in boxes of 24 or cabs of 50!)

I had a dud Esmeralda from the Christmas sampler last year. The box I've been smoking through this year has been the complete opposite, stunning smokes!

I'm hoping (beyond hope) that at least a few of them sing to me... 2/12 and I've tasted virtually nothing.

You've given me hope so thank you @Kaptain Karl:D
