Popular Post Chas.Alpha Posted June 6, 2020 Popular Post Posted June 6, 2020 I’m going to sprinkle some urban legend in with some historical facts on this one... In 1965, the Beatles released their “Rubber Soul” album. The music critics went mad for the thing, saying it was the most important work since Dave Brubeck’s Take Five LP. In a little house in LA, a 22 year old kid named Brian Wilson also heard the record and exclaimed to his girlfriend “I’m going to write the greatest album ever!”, while his band were touring Japan and the Eastern Pacific. Brian went to work on his project. Fast forward... A few months later, when the band had returned to the US, Brian gathered them together to listen to the rough mixes on what he’d been working on. Mike, the lead singer expressed his doubts on whether The Beach Boys fans would like, and more importantly, buy this new direction. Most members agreed with Mike, suspicious that this was Brian’s move towards a solo career... Brian did not back down, instead offering up to the band and Capitol Records a couple of gems like Good Vibrations and Sloop John B. The boys made Pet Sounds... How does this relate to the Fundadores? I went to Havana January 19 with some friends of mine from Tampa. On our last day, I found the box of TF that had been the focus of my entire trip. I had already spent most of my CUC, and had nothing but my emergency stash of $300 US in my wallet. My “Beach Boys” literally shamed me into exchanging those bills with Jasmine at the LCDH/ Melia Habana to buy the box. I had to bum $10 CUC for my fare to the airport. ? These were the best in my rotation this year. Ready, willin’ and able! The cigar, like the album, starts with a bang: Wouldn’t it be nice if we were older?... Then, gracefully into “You still believe in me.” What a great cigar... The strength of the Fundadores grows a bit, but then mellows back as if to say “That’s Not Me.” That mellow flavor of coffee, choconut and toffee comes thru like a fine stick saying “Don’t Cry, Put Your Head on my Shoulder...” 2nd 3rd: Building the strength to say ...”I’m waiting for the day when you can love again.” We’re just going to enjoy the delightful weather for a moment, dreaming of taking my 17’ boat over to the Bahamas... Sloop John B. Back to reality; God Only Knows what I would be without the Lancero. This song makes the record, and for that matter, this cigar review... 3rd of 3: “I know There’s an Answer.” Medium strength, full flavor. Both the cigar and the record have driven me to break out my Ukulele. Nothing good is coming of this... This cigar is “Here Today.” No further rest needed. As far as the song, Paul McCartney has said many times that PET SOUNDS and in particular this song was a major influence on the direction of Sgt. Peppers. Of note, he chose to name his soliloquy to John “Here Today...“ I tear up every time I hear that one. ”I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times.” The cigar is heading for the band, and I keep begging it to not ever get there. Delicious and magnificent. Please don’t let this moment stop... ”Caroline, No”. She’s on the rim of the ashtray. No. Caroline No... The last one... 19
zigarrenziggy Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 Great review! Pet Sounds is a seminal record, one that everyone should hear. Sloop John B, for me, is a particular standout. Happy smoking!
slowsmoke Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 A+ man well done. Great choice. Makes me want to light a fundy and fire up this album.
99call Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 A fantastic cigar,.......and Oh what an album! 'God Only Knows' winning frequent "best of song of all time" is the only poll stat I go "yep! they nailed it". I'm now listening to the track..... Jesus, just perfect! yes slightly overly saccharine....but perfect none the less.
JohnS Posted June 6, 2020 Posted June 6, 2020 Great review paired with an incredible album. Pet Sounds never grows old for me...it's always 'fresh'.
Kongelunden Posted June 7, 2020 Posted June 7, 2020 Great review! I still have not had the opportunity to try the Trini Fundadores myself, but they are very high on the wish list - and this review certainly makes me look forward to the day when it happens
